Rifabutin 150 MG Description

Rifabutin 150 mg tablet is an antibiotic used with other medicines to help prevent or slow down the spread of Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC) disease and tuberculosis (TB) in HIV-positive persons.

It is also used to treat H pylori infections that cause gastric ulcers. Rifabutin 150 mg tablet is also known as Rifamycin, an antimycobacterial medicine. The mode of action of Rifabutin 150 mg tablet is by killing the Mycobacteria species of bacteria. Rifabutin is a reserved antibiotic used specifically for the aforementioned conditions, as its undue use may develop resistance to treatment with this medicine. The directions for use of Rifabutin 150 mg tablets should be strictly followed. Side effects of Rifabutin 150 mg tablets include rashes, low haemoglobin, nausea, fever, heartburn/gastritis, loose stools, etc. These usually go away in a few days as the body adjusts to the medicines. The treating doctor must know the affected person’s medical history and all other medications being taken. This is so they can check for any potential interaction issues. Rifabutin 150 mg tablets give an orange-red colour to urine and all body fluids, including tears.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

^

Q: Is Rifabutin 150 mg tablet the same as Rifampin?

A: Rifabutin 150 mg tablet is a longer-acting ant-TB antibiotic, having up to 35 hours of half-life. Rifampin, on the other hand, has a half-life of 3.5 hours. Both are used against the same bacteria and disease, but Rifabutin is more potent. Also, since TB bacteria have become resistant to Rifampin, Rifabutin is used instead.

Q: After using Rifabutin 150 mg tablets for four weeks, I am observing a change in the colour of my urine. It is red. Is this a result of bleeding?

A: This is not something you should be concerned about, as long as you have no other symptoms. Rifabutin 150 mg tablets cause an orange-red discolouration of the skin and body fluids like urine and tears. It is a side effect of this medicine and has nothing to do with blood loss or hematuria.

Q: Can I stop Rifabutin 150 mg tablets once I feel better?

A: Do not stop taking this medicine even if you feel better. Anti-TB treatment takes 6-12 months to complete. Whether or not you have symptoms during this time, it is vital to finish the course of treatment. If you stop in between, the bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotic, and the disease will become harder to treat.
