Medical Description

Resipax Total tablet is a combination medicine used to relieve a dry cough, particularly when throat irritation or allergy symptoms are involved. It contains levocetirizine, which reduces the effect of histamine involved in allergic symptoms, and dextromethorphan hydrobromide, which suppresses the urge to cough. Levocetirizine can ease allergy-related irritation, while dextromethorphan acts on the brain's cough-control signals. Resipax Total tablet is taken by mouth and may be used with or without food, exactly as advised by a doctor. It is not intended to replace assessment of a persistent or breathing-related cough.

Uses

  • Dry cough: Dextromethorphan hydrobromide suppresses the urge to cough when little or no mucus is being brought up.
  • Allergy-related cough: Levocetirizine reduces histamine-related irritation that can accompany sneezing, a runny nose or throat irritation.
  • Throat irritation: The combination can calm coughing triggered by an irritated throat when there is no need to clear mucus.

Do not use it with monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines or soon after stopping one.

Side effects

  • Upset stomach: Levocetirizine or dextromethorphan may disturb digestion and cause nausea or abdominal discomfort. Seek advice if vomiting or severe pain develops.

How does this medicine work?

Levocetirizine reduces the effect of histamine, a chemical messenger involved in allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and throat irritation. Dextromethorphan acts on the brain's cough-control centre to reduce the urge to cough. Together, these ingredients can ease a dry, irritating cough when allergy symptoms or throat irritation contribute to it.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Resipax Total tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines and some antidepressants can cause serious serotonin-related reactions with dextromethorphan; sleeping tablets, sedatives, opioid pain medicines, seizure medicines and other mental health medicines can increase drowsiness or slow breathing. Do not combine these medicines unless your doctor confirms it is suitable.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known.
