Medical Description

Polypin capsule is a prescription combination medicine used to help prevent heart attack and stroke and manage high blood pressure and high cholesterol in people with long-term heart disease. It contains aspirin, which reduces harmful clot formation; atorvastatin, which lowers cholesterol; metoprolol, which slows the heartbeat and reduces the heart's workload; and ramipril, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. Together, these actions improve blood flow and reduce strain on the heart. Polypin capsule is swallowed whole with sufficient water, with or without food as advised by the doctor, and is used under regular medical supervision.

Uses

  • Heart attack prevention: Aspirin reduces platelet sticking, while atorvastatin, metoprolol and ramipril address cholesterol, heart workload and blood pressure to lower cardiovascular risk.
  • Stroke prevention: Aspirin helps reduce harmful clot formation, while the other ingredients help control blood pressure, cholesterol and strain on the heart.
  • High blood pressure: Metoprolol slows the heartbeat and ramipril relaxes blood vessels, helping reduce pressure and the workload placed on the heart.
  • High cholesterol: Atorvastatin lowers harmful cholesterol and triglycerides, helping reduce fatty build-up in blood vessels.
  • Long-term heart disease management: The combination reduces heart workload and helps control blood pressure and cholesterol, which may lower the chance of chest pain in established heart disease.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor before using Polypin capsule while breastfeeding. Ramipril and atorvastatin may not be suitable, so your treatment should be reviewed by a healthcare professional.

Driving

Driving

Polypin capsule may cause dizziness, tiredness or fainting, especially when blood pressure falls. Do not drive if you feel affected.

  • Swallow Polypin capsule whole with water and use it exactly as prescribed.
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to reduce dizziness or fainting.

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. Overdose may cause vomiting, dizziness, very low blood pressure, a slow heartbeat, breathing difficulty or bleeding.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Aspirin reduces the ability of platelets, small blood cells involved in clotting, to stick together. Atorvastatin reduces cholesterol production in the liver, lowering harmful cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Metoprolol slows the heartbeat and reduces the force of each heartbeat. Ramipril relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Polypin capsule works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin, clopidogrel and other blood thinners because they can increase bleeding; ibuprofen, naproxen and other pain relievers because they can increase bleeding and stomach risks; potassium supplements or potassium-sparing water tablets because they can raise potassium; other blood-pressure medicines because they can lower blood pressure too much; aliskiren because ramipril with it can increase kidney problems and high potassium; medicines that slow the heart because they can cause a very slow heartbeat; and ketoconazole or some antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral medicines because they can raise atorvastatin levels and muscle risks.

Interactions with food items

Avoid excessive alcohol because it may worsen dizziness and add to stomach or muscle risks. Ask your doctor before consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice because it may increase atorvastatin levels.
