Medical Description

Podoprox tablet is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract and genital tract. It contains cefpodoxime proxetil, which belongs to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. Cefpodoxime stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, causing them to die. Podoprox tablet is taken by mouth only as prescribed, and the complete prescribed course should be followed even if symptoms improve.

Uses

  • Respiratory infections: It treats certain bacterial infections of the throat, tonsils, middle ear, bronchi or lungs when cefpodoxime is suitable.
  • Urinary tract infections: It treats susceptible bacterial infections affecting the bladder or urinary passage, helping relieve symptoms as the infection clears.
  • Skin infections: It treats uncomplicated bacterial infections affecting the skin and nearby tissues when the bacteria respond to cefpodoxime.
  • Certain genital infections: It may treat uncomplicated gonorrhoea when testing and a clinician confirm that this antibiotic is appropriate.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you have had a serious allergy to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporins or severe immediate allergy to penicillin-type antibiotics unless your doctor confirms it is appropriate.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Cefpodoxime can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Seek medical help for severe diarrhoea, fever or blood in stools, even after treatment ends.
  • Nausea: Cefpodoxime may upset the stomach and cause queasiness after a tablet. Seek help if vomiting prevents treatment or fluids.
  • Vomiting: Changes in the digestive tract may cause vomiting during treatment. Contact your doctor if you cannot keep fluids or the medicine down.
  • Abdominal pain: Changes in the gut may cause cramps or discomfort. Report severe pain, swelling or persistent symptoms rather than treating them yourself.
  • Rash: An itchy or spreading rash may indicate allergy. Stop the medicine and get emergency help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Cefpodoxime can pass into breast milk. Ask your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if you feel dizzy, unwell or develop a severe headache.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific food or alcohol interaction is established, but avoid alcohol if it worsens nausea or dizziness.

Directions for Use

Take Podoprox tablet exactly as prescribed. If the pack identifies it as a dispersible tablet, disperse it in water and drink the prepared mixture immediately. Otherwise, take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Do not keep any remaining mixture or crush and chew the tablet unless instructed. Complete the prescribed treatment.

Storage and disposal

Store Podoprox tablets in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on the pack, away from sunlight and moisture. Keep them out of children's reach. Do not use expired tablets or flush them away.

Quick Tips

  • Take every prescribed dose and do not stop early without medical advice.
  • Do not use Podoprox for a cold, flu or another viral illness.
  • Tell your doctor about penicillin or cephalosporin allergy.
  • Ask your doctor before using antacids, uricosurics or kidney-affecting medicines with it.
  • Report severe diarrhoea, rash or breathing difficulty promptly.

Dosage

Overdose

Excess may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or seizures, especially in people with kidney problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefpodoxime proxetil is converted in the body to cefpodoxime. It blocks bacterial enzymes needed to build a strong cell wall, so susceptible bacteria weaken and die. It does not work against viral infections such as common colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Podoprox works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, probenecid and other uricosurics may increase cefpodoxime levels; antacids may reduce its absorption; kidney-affecting medicines such as vancomycin or tacrolimus may increase kidney risk; and live bacterial vaccines, including typhoid or tuberculosis vaccines, may work less well.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Follow your prescriber's advice about taking Podoprox tablet with food and about separating it from antacids or mineral supplements.
