Medical Description

Ozolin powder for injection is an antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections and to help prevent infection around selected surgeries. It contains cefazolin, which stops bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive. It can be used for susceptible infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues when a clinician selects it. Ozolin powder for injection is prepared and given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, and must not be self-injected.

Uses

  • Susceptible bacterial infections: These infections can cause pain, fever or swelling; cefazolin helps control susceptible bacteria and support recovery when prescribed by a clinician.
  • Surgical infection prevention: Bacteria can enter tissues during selected operations; cefazolin given around surgery lowers the chance of a post-surgical infection.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, cefazolin or another cephalosporin medicine, do not use it. A history of a serious immediate penicillin allergy needs medical assessment before it is given. Tell your doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-associated bowel inflammation or severe allergy history.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may occur where Ozolin is given. Report spreading redness, severe pain or increasing swelling to the healthcare professional.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb helpful bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Seek urgent advice for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Nausea: Cefazolin may upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Tell your doctor if nausea prevents drinking or eating.
  • Skin rash: Cefazolin can cause a new red or itchy rash, which may be an early allergy sign. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation can cause vomiting after the injection. Inform the healthcare professional if it continues or prevents fluid intake.

Storage and disposal

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefazolin prevents bacteria from building the protective wall around their cells. Without this wall, susceptible bacteria break down and die.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ozolin works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor about warfarin, because cefazolin may increase bleeding tendency and require blood-test monitoring; amikacin or kanamycin, because combined treatment may increase kidney stress; and the purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine or inactivated cholera vaccine, because vaccine timing or response may need review.
