Medical Description

Ocupol Eye Oint eye ointment is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It contains a combination of polymyxin B and chloramphenicol, two antibiotics that act against susceptible bacteria. One ingredient, polymyxin B, damages the bacterial covering, while chloramphenicol stops bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. Together they reduce bacteria in the affected eye and may relieve infection-related redness, soreness, itching or discharge. Ocupol eye ointment is placed inside the lower eyelid and must be used exactly as prescribed by an eye doctor.

Uses

  • Bacterial eye infection: This ointment treats susceptible bacterial infections that may cause redness, soreness, itching or discharge.

How does this medicine work?

The first antibiotic, polymyxin B, damages the outer covering of susceptible bacteria. The second, chloramphenicol, prevents bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. Together, they lower the bacterial load in the eye and allow infection-related irritation to settle.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ocupol Eye Oint eye ointment works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other eye medicines, chloramphenicol products and medicines that can affect blood-cell production.
