Medical Description

Nirtran NS injection is a dextran-based medicine used for short-term fluid replacement when circulating fluid volume has fallen after surgery, injury or burns. Dextran is a large carbohydrate that stays in the bloodstream and helps draw fluid into the blood vessels. This expands circulating volume and may support blood pressure while the underlying fluid loss is managed. Nirtran NS injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with the medical team selecting the route and monitoring the response.

Uses

  • Short-term fluid-volume replacement: Dextran helps expand circulating volume after fluid loss associated with surgery, injury or burns, under close medical supervision.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. It may not be suitable if you have severe kidney failure, severe heart failure, serious bleeding or low platelets, liver disease, an iron-storage or iron-metabolism disorder, excess iron in the blood, or a condition involving red blood cell breakdown. The treating doctor will assess these risks before use.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may occur where the injection is given. Tell the medical team promptly if swelling spreads or becomes severe.
  • Serious reaction: Breathing difficulty, sudden facial swelling or convulsions need emergency medical help. Alert the medical team immediately if any of these occur.
  • Fever or chills: A temporary rise in temperature or shivering may develop during treatment. Tell the nurse promptly so the reaction can be assessed.
  • Nausea or vomiting: The injection may upset the stomach during or after administration. Tell the medical team if vomiting continues or you feel faint.
  • Headache: Head pain, dizziness, joint aches or back pain may follow treatment and affect balance or movement; remain seated if dizzy and report severe symptoms promptly.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The medical team will select the approved route and monitor you during administration.

Storage and disposal

Nirtran NS injection will be stored and handled by the hospital or clinic according to the pack instructions. It must be protected from unsuitable temperatures and direct sunlight. Damaged or unused containers should be disposed of by the healthcare facility.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the medical team about kidney, liver or heart disease before treatment.
  • Report breathlessness, chest discomfort or sudden swelling during administration.
  • Tell the doctor about blood thinners and medicines that affect clotting.
  • Remain under observation for the period advised after administration.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much dextran may cause fluid overload, breathing difficulty, swelling, altered blood clotting or kidney problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dextran remains in the bloodstream and increases the pull that keeps fluid inside the blood vessels. This expands circulating volume and may help support blood pressure for a short time.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Nirtran NS injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention enoxaparin, apixaban, prasugrel, aspirin, warfarin or other blood-thinning medicines, because dextran may add to their effect and increase bleeding risk.
