Medical Description

Hermin infusion is an intravenous nutritional preparation used to provide amino acids when a person cannot meet protein needs adequately by mouth or needs supervised nutritional support. It contains a combination of essential and other amino acids, including arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine and glycine, with sorbitol as part of the formulation. The amino acids provide building blocks for protein formation, muscle maintenance and tissue repair. Hermin infusion is given through a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with monitoring based on the person's condition.

Uses

  • Intravenous amino acid support: Provides protein building blocks when oral nutrition is inadequate or not possible under medical supervision.
  • Protein maintenance support: Essential and other amino acids support the body's production of proteins needed for muscles and tissue maintenance.
  • Recovery nutrition: May be included in a hospital nutrition plan during illness or recovery when specialised nutritional support is required.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. It may not be suitable for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, problems processing amino acids, uncontrolled fluid overload or certain metabolic disorders. The treating doctor will assess your condition before infusion.

Side effects

  • Nausea: The amino acid infusion may upset the stomach during or after administration. Tell the nurse if nausea becomes severe or persistent.
  • Flushing: Changes during infusion may cause warmth or redness of the skin. Report sudden worsening or discomfort to the medical team immediately.
  • Infusion-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may occur around the intravenous line. Tell the nurse so the site can be checked promptly.
  • Allergic reaction: Rash, wheezing or swelling may occur rarely. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

  • Report breathing difficulty, rash or facial swelling during or after treatment.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much infusion may cause fluid, electrolyte or metabolic problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Hermin infusion supplies essential amino acids that the body cannot make in sufficient amounts, including isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Arginine, histidine and glycine support protein formation and other normal body functions. These amino acids enter the bloodstream through the infusion and are used to build and repair body proteins. Sorbitol is included as a carbohydrate ingredient in the formulation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Hermin infusion works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines for kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, fluid retention, blood pressure or electrolyte imbalance, because they may affect nutritional, blood sugar, fluid or electrolyte management.
