Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Ramipril works by relaxing and widening blood vessels. It blocks a substance in the body (angiotensin II) that normally causes blood vessels to tighten. By reducing this effect, it lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow, and reduces the workload on the heart.
- Atorvastatin works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver. It blocks an enzyme responsible for making cholesterol, which helps lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while slightly increasing “good” HDL cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Taking this combination with other blood pressure medicines may lower your blood pressure too much, causing dizziness or lightheadedness
- Use with diuretics (water pills) may increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure
- Avoid combining with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing medicines as it may increase potassium levels in the blood
- Caution with painkillers (NSAIDs like ibuprofen or diclofenac), as they may reduce the effect on blood pressure and affect kidney function
- Taking with certain antibiotics or antifungal medicines (like clarithromycin or ketoconazole) may increase the level of atorvastatin in the body and raise the risk of muscle problems
- Use with other cholesterol-lowering medicines (like fibrates) may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects
- Caution with immunosuppressants (like ciclosporin) as they may increase the risk of side effects
- Inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners (like warfarin), as monitoring may be required
Interactions with food items
- Avoid consuming large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it can increase the level of atorvastatin in your body
- Limit intake of high potassium foods (such as bananas, oranges, coconut water, and spinach), as they may increase potassium levels when taken with ramipril
- Follow a low-salt (low sodium) diet, as advised by your doctor, to help improve blood pressure control
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of liver-related problems and enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect
- Maintain a balanced, heart-healthy diet (low in saturated fats and cholesterol) to support the effectiveness of this medicine
