Medical Description

Mespas-Plus 50/ syrup is an oral combination medicine used to relieve pain and reduce fever. It contains mefenamic acid, which reduces chemical signals involved in pain, inflammation and fever, and paracetamol, which lowers pain and body temperature. Together, these ingredients can ease headaches, toothache, sore throat, menstrual pain, muscle aches and other painful conditions when prescribed. Shake the syrup well, measure it with the supplied device and use it by mouth with or without food as directed.

Uses

  • Pain: Mefenamic acid and paracetamol relieve headaches, migraine, nerve pain, toothache, sore throat, menstrual pain, arthritis pain and muscle aches.
  • Fever: Paracetamol and mefenamic acid lower a high temperature by reducing chemical signals involved in the body's fever response.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you have had asthma, hives or another allergic reaction after aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines, or if you have stomach ulcers or bleeding, severe kidney disease, severe liver disease or severe heart failure. Do not combine it with another product containing mefenamic acid or paracetamol unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Mefenamic acid can irritate the stomach and cause a sick feeling, especially around treatment. Seek care if vomiting prevents drinking.
  • Diarrhoea: This combination can loosen stools and upset the bowel. Contact your doctor promptly if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or bloody.
  • Skin rash: Sensitivity to either ingredient may cause red, itchy or raised patches. Stop using the syrup and get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Stomach bleeding: Mefenamic acid can injure the stomach or bowel, causing black stools or vomit that looks like blood. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Mefenamic acid may not be suitable, especially later in pregnancy, so use this combination only when prescribed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The doctor will assess whether the combination is suitable for you and your baby, because mefenamic acid and paracetamol have different breastfeeding considerations.

Driving

Driving

Mespas-Plus syrup may cause dizziness or blurred vision in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery if these effects occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol while using Mespas-Plus syrup because it may increase stomach irritation and the risk of serious paracetamol-related harm.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack. Do not drink from the bottle. Measure Mespas-Plus syrup and take it by mouth with or without food as advised. Do not use more or for longer than prescribed.

Storage and disposal

Store Mespas-Plus syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Dispose of unwanted syrup according to local medicine disposal guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before every use.
  • Use the supplied measuring device, not a household spoon.
  • Check pain, fever and cold products for paracetamol before using them together.
  • Keep a record of a child's temperature and all doses given to prevent accidental excess.
  • Seek emergency help for black stools, vomiting blood, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much of this medicine can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or serious problems before severe symptoms appear. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Mefenamic acid blocks the formation of chemical messengers that contribute to pain, swelling and fever. Paracetamol acts differently to reduce pain and lower body temperature. Together, the ingredients provide relief from pain and fever.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Mespas-Plus syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the doctor if you use aspirin or other anti-inflammatory pain medicines, blood thinners, steroids, medicines for high blood pressure or water tablets, methotrexate, or another product containing paracetamol or mefenamic acid. These combinations can raise the risk of stomach bleeding, kidney problems or an accidental excess of an ingredient.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol because it may worsen stomach irritation and increase the risk of serious paracetamol-related harm. Food may make the syrup easier on the stomach. Do not combine it with another product containing paracetamol.
