Medical Description

Magnacillin Dry dry syrup is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, including typhoid fever. It contains ampicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building a protective cell wall. Magnacillin dry syrup is prepared as an oral liquid and is given by mouth on an empty stomach as prescribed. Use it only for a bacterial infection diagnosed or considered likely by a doctor.

Uses

  • Throat and ear infections: Certain susceptible bacteria can infect the throat or ears; ampicillin helps clear infections when the bacteria respond to it.
  • Urinary tract infections: This medicine treats susceptible bacterial infections affecting the urinary system when prescribed for that infection.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Ampicillin helps clear susceptible bacterial infections affecting the skin or tissues beneath it.
  • Typhoid fever: This medicine treats typhoid fever caused by bacteria that respond to ampicillin and supports recovery from the infection.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Magnacillin dry syrup if you have had a serious allergy to ampicillin, penicillin or a related antibiotic. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, glandular fever, asthma or previous severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Ampicillin can disturb helpful bowel bacteria, causing loose stools. Contact your doctor promptly if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood.

  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation can cause vomiting during treatment. Seek medical advice if vomiting continues or signs of dehydration appear.
  • Rash: An itchy or spreading rash may be a sign of allergy rather than simple irritation. Stop the medicine and seek urgent medical advice.
  • Allergic reaction: Hives, swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or breathing difficulty need emergency medical help immediately.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. The safety of ampicillin during pregnancy has not been fully established, so the doctor will weigh the need for treatment against possible risks.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ampicillin can pass into breast milk in small amounts. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding and watch the baby for diarrhoea, rash or oral thrush.

Driving

Driving

Magnacillin dry syrup may cause dizziness, reduced alertness, sleepiness or visual changes. Do not drive if you feel affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

It is not known whether alcohol interacts with Magnacillin dry syrup. Ask your doctor whether alcohol is suitable while you are recovering from the infection.

Directions for Use

Before first use, prepare Magnacillin dry syrup with clean boiled and cooled water up to the mark on the bottle, following the pack instructions, and shake well. Use the measuring cup provided and do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Magnacillin dry syrup by mouth on an empty stomach, exactly as directed by your doctor. Continue the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you to stop, even if you start to feel better.

Storage and disposal

Store the unopened powder and the prepared oral liquid as directed on the pack, protected from heat and direct sunlight. Keep it tightly closed and out of children's reach. Do not use it after the expiry date or beyond the storage period advised after preparation. Dispose of leftover medicine according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Prepare the dry syrup exactly according to the pack instructions and shake the oral liquid well before every use.
  • Measure each amount with the supplied cup, not a household spoon.
  • Give Magnacillin dry syrup on an empty stomach as prescribed.
  • Do not share this antibiotic or save it for a later illness.
  • Get emergency medical help for facial swelling, wheezing or breathing difficulty.
  • Contact your doctor for severe or bloody diarrhoea during or after treatment.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much ampicillin may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or seizures, especially in people with kidney problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The ampicillin in Magnacillin dry syrup is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It blocks formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is the protective outer structure bacteria need to survive. Without this wall, susceptible bacteria become damaged and die, helping the infection clear.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Magnacillin dry syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine and inactivated cholera vaccine, because antibiotic treatment may affect vaccine response; amikacin, because combined antibacterial treatment needs medical supervision; pemetrexed, because ampicillin may raise pemetrexed levels; and chloroquine, because it may reduce ampicillin absorption.

Interactions with food items

Take Magnacillin dry syrup on an empty stomach as advised. Food can reduce its absorption, so follow the instructions given by your doctor.
