Medical Description

Lyxumia Pre Filled solution for injection is used with diet and physical activity to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains lixisenatide, which acts like a natural gut hormone that helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high. It also lowers glucagon release and slows stomach emptying, so sugar from food enters the blood more gradually after meals. Lyxumia injection is injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm using the pre-filled pen after a healthcare professional has taught you how to use it.

Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes: The lixisenatide component helps adults lower high blood sugar alongside an advised eating plan and physical activity.
  • After-meal blood sugar control: By slowing stomach emptying and supporting insulin release when sugar is high, the injection helps reduce sharp rises after eating.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Tell your doctor if you have had pancreatitis, severe stomach-emptying problems, severe kidney disease or gallbladder disease.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Feeling sick is common when treatment begins because lixisenatide slows stomach emptying; seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Vomiting: Stomach contents may come back up, which can cause dehydration; contact your doctor if vomiting continues.
  • Diarrhoea: Loose stools can occur and may reduce body fluids; drink suitable fluids and report severe or persistent diarrhoea.
  • Low blood sugar: Sweating, shaking, hunger, fast heartbeat or confusion can occur, especially with insulin or sulfonylureas; treat promptly as advised.
  • Injection-site reaction: Redness, itching or swelling may appear where the pen is used; seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or trying to conceive. Use Lyxumia injection during pregnancy only if your doctor decides it is necessary after considering the benefits and risks.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The safety of lixisenatide during breastfeeding is not fully established, so use Lyxumia injection only on medical advice.

Driving

Driving

Low blood sugar or dizziness can impair driving. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel shaky, confused, dizzy or otherwise unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Limit or avoid alcohol because it may worsen low blood sugar, dizziness and stomach symptoms.

Directions for Use

Your doctor or nurse will teach you how to inject Lyxumia injection under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Do not self-inject until a healthcare professional has trained and authorised you to use the pre-filled pen. Rotate injection sites, inspect the liquid before use, and do not use it if it is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles. Never share the pen or needles.

Storage and disposal

Store the unopened Lyxumia injection as directed on the pack, usually in a refrigerator, and protect it from freezing and light. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use a pen if the liquid is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles. Place used needles and pens in a suitable sharps container as advised locally.

Quick Tips

  • Check the pen liquid before each use and do not use it if it is cloudy or coloured.
  • Rotate injection sites to reduce irritation and never share the pen or needles.
  • Keep a source of fast-acting sugar available if your doctor has advised it for low blood sugar.
  • Continue your recommended food plan, physical activity and blood sugar checks.
  • Report persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain or signs of dehydration promptly.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much lixisenatide may cause severe nausea, vomiting or low blood sugar, particularly with other blood sugar-lowering medicines. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

After a meal, lixisenatide acts like a natural gut hormone. It encourages the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high, reduces glucagon, a hormone that tells the liver to release sugar, and slows stomach emptying. These actions help limit blood sugar rises after eating.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Lyxumia injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, insulin and sulfonylureas can increase the risk of low blood sugar; oral medicines such as antibiotics and contraceptive tablets may be absorbed later or less completely because stomach emptying is slowed; and gatifloxacin can disturb blood sugar control. Medicines needing rapid absorption may require different timing, as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is established. Continue the meal plan recommended for your diabetes and avoid excessive alcohol because it can worsen blood sugar control and low blood sugar risk.
