Medical Description

Lemolate syrup is a combination medicine used for short-term relief of fever, headache, body aches and a blocked nose during a cold. It contains paracetamol, which lowers fever and relieves pain, caffeine, which can enhance paracetamol's pain relief, and phenylephrine, which reduces swelling in the nasal lining. Together, these ingredients ease several symptoms but do not remove the cause of an infection. Lemolate syrup is taken by mouth as a liquid, measured with the device supplied with the pack, and should be used only for short-term symptom relief.

Uses

  • Fever: Paracetamol lowers a raised body temperature and eases the feverish discomfort that can accompany a cold.
  • Headache and body aches: Paracetamol relieves common cold-related pain, while caffeine may strengthen its pain-relieving effect.
  • Blocked nose: Phenylephrine temporarily reduces swelling inside the nasal passages, making breathing through the nose easier during a cold.
  • Cold-related discomfort: The combination eases several symptoms that occur together during a cold, but it does not cure the infection.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Lemolate syrup. Do not use it with another product containing paracetamol or an oral decongestant unless a doctor advises it. Ask your doctor before use if you have severe liver disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma or difficulty passing urine. Do not use it if you have been told to avoid paracetamol, caffeine or phenylephrine.

Side effects

  • Restlessness: Caffeine and phenylephrine can make you feel jittery or unable to sleep; limit caffeinated drinks and seek advice if this is severe.
  • Fast heartbeat: Phenylephrine and caffeine may cause a pounding or unusually quick heartbeat; get urgent care for chest pain, fainting or severe palpitations.
  • Stomach upset: Paracetamol may cause nausea or abdominal discomfort; get urgent help for repeated vomiting or severe stomach pain.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Ask your doctor before using Lemolate syrup during pregnancy. Phenylephrine may not be suitable, and the full combination should be reviewed with your health conditions and other medicines.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ask your doctor before using Lemolate syrup while breastfeeding. Caffeine passes into breast milk, and phenylephrine may affect milk production in some people.

Driving

Driving

Lemolate syrup may cause dizziness, restlessness or reduced alertness in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol while using Lemolate syrup because it may increase the risk of paracetamol-related harm and worsen dizziness or restlessness.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack. Do not drink directly from the bottle. Use Lemolate syrup only as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Check other cold, flu or pain medicines for overlapping ingredients before using them together.

Storage and disposal

Store Lemolate syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date or if the liquid changes colour or smell. Dispose of unused syrup according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Use the supplied measuring device rather than a household spoon.
  • Check every cold, flu or pain product for paracetamol and phenylephrine before combining it with Lemolate syrup.
  • Limit caffeine-containing drinks and avoid alcohol while using this medicine.
  • Seek medical advice if fever or pain continues or becomes worse.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose of paracetamol can seriously harm the liver even before symptoms appear. Excess caffeine or phenylephrine may cause nausea, restlessness, a fast heartbeat or high blood pressure. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Paracetamol lowers the production of chemical signals involved in pain and fever. Caffeine can enhance paracetamol's pain-relieving effect and may reduce tiredness. Phenylephrine narrows swollen blood vessels in the nasal lining, helping to open a blocked nasal passage.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Lemolate syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor if you use another paracetamol-containing medicine, an oral decongestant, a medicine for high blood pressure or heart problems, an antidepressant, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, a sedative or a medicine that affects the liver. Other paracetamol-containing products can increase overdose risk, monoamine oxidase inhibitors can intensify phenylephrine's effect on blood pressure, and sedatives may add to drowsiness.

Interactions with food items

Limit coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks while using Lemolate syrup because added caffeine may cause restlessness, poor sleep or a fast heartbeat. Avoid alcohol because it can increase the risk of paracetamol-related harm.
