Medical Description
Ixempra injection contains ixabepilone, a chemotherapy medicine belonging to the microtubule inhibitor class. It is used in certain treatment regimens for metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer. It may be used with capecitabine when the cancer is resistant to an anthracycline and a taxane, or is taxane-resistant when further anthracycline treatment is not appropriate. It may also be used alone when the cancer has progressed after treatment with an anthracycline, a taxane, and capecitabine.
Trained healthcare professionals must prepare and administer this medicine as an intravenous infusion in a hospital or clinic. Premedication is given before each infusion to reduce the risk of hypersensitivity reactions. It significantly lowers blood cell counts in most patients, so regular blood tests are essential.Liver function should also be assessed, as hepatic impairment can increase the risk of severe toxicity. ,
Because Ixempra injection affects nerve tissue, it commonly causes numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy), which your doctor will monitor and may require a dose adjustment if it becomes severe. It also commonly causes fatigue, muscle and joint pain, hair loss, nausea, and mouth sores. Contact your doctor urgently if you develop fever, signs of infection,a severe allergic reaction, or severe or worsening numbness or weakness.
Before starting Ixempra injection, tell your doctor about any liver problems, heart problems, or nerve-related conditions, and about all other medicines you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or could become pregnant, as this medicine may harm an unborn baby and effective contraception is required.
