Medical Description

Iross XL suspension is an iron and folic acid medicine used to correct low iron levels and support haemoglobin and red blood cell formation. It contains elemental iron, which supplies the mineral used to make haemoglobin, and folic acid, which supports normal cell division and red blood cell development. Together, they help oxygen move from the lungs to body tissues and may improve tiredness linked with iron deficiency. Iross XL suspension is taken by mouth, shaken well and measured with the device supplied with the pack.

Uses

  • Iron deficiency anaemia: Low iron limits haemoglobin production and can cause weakness; Iross XL suspension helps restore iron needed for healthy red blood cells.
  • Folate-related red blood cell formation: Inadequate folate can impair the body's production of mature blood cells; this supplement provides folic acid to support normal cell development.
  • Low energy from iron deficiency: Restoring iron supports oxygen delivery to tissues, which may ease tiredness caused by low iron.
  • Pregnancy-related iron and folate needs: Folic acid supports fetal neural development and iron supports maternal red blood cell production when a clinician recommends supplementation.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Iross XL suspension. Do not use iron supplements for anaemia caused by a condition other than iron deficiency unless your doctor recommends them. Tell your doctor if you have iron overload, repeated blood transfusions or stomach or bowel disease.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Iron can make stools harder or less frequent. Drink enough water and eat fibre-rich food if appropriate; seek help for severe pain or inability to pass stool.
  • Nausea: Iron may irritate the stomach, especially when it does not suit you. Tell your doctor if nausea is persistent or vomiting prevents drinking.
  • Dark stools: Iron commonly makes stools dark as it passes through the gut. Seek medical help if stools are black and tar-like or contain blood.
  • Diarrhoea: Some people develop loose stools after taking iron or folic acid. Replace fluids and report severe or persistent symptoms.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Iross XL suspension well before each use.
  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much iron can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or bloody stools. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The elemental iron component supplies the mineral used to make haemoglobin, the red blood cell protein that carries oxygen. The folic acid component supports normal cell division and the formation and maturation of red blood cells.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Iross XL suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines, and products containing calcium or magnesium, can lower iron absorption, while iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicines and some antibiotics. Separate products as advised by your doctor.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk and calcium-rich foods can reduce iron absorption. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from Iross XL suspension.
