Medical Description

Intamox O Tablet is an antibiotic. Treating several different types of bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, ears, nose, urinary tract, skin, etc., is the primary use of the Intamox O tablet. This tablet is also used with other medications to stop the growth of H. pylori bacteria, the most common cause of stomach ulcers. This medication is not effective against infections caused by viruses or fungus. The main component of this medication is Amoxicillin. It belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics. The mode of action of Intamox O tablets is to kill the bacteria and lower the infection and symptoms associated with the infection, such as fever, sore throat, etc. Diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, weakness, nausea, and vomiting are some of the common side effects of Intamox O Tablet. Most of them do not require any medical attention. However, it is best to consult the doctor in case of persisting or worsening symptoms. People allergic to penicillin should inform their doctor. Contraindication of Intamox O tablets is a severe kidney problem. These tablets can make birth control pills less effective.

Uses

  • As per CDSCO and USFDA, Intamox O tablet is indicated for the treatment of infections due to designated bacteria.
  • It is used in the treatment of various infections of the ear, nose, throat, genitourinary tract, skin and skin structure, and lower respiratory tract.
  • It is used in combination with other medications for the treatment of H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.

Contraindications

  • If you have a history of serious hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or other similar antibiotics (e.g., penicillins or cephalosporins). Serious allergic reactions require immediate emergency treatment with supportive measures.
  • If you have severe kidney impairment, the dose should be reduced.
  • If you are diagnosed with Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea. It has been reported with the use of nearly all antibiotics, including Intamox O tablet and may range in severity from mild diarrhoea to fatal colitis. Treatment with antibiotics alters the colon's normal flora, leading to overgrowth of C. difficile bacteria.
  • If you are diagnosed with mononucleosis infection. Using Intamox O tablets can cause an itchy and red skin rash.
  • If you are not correctly diagnosed with a suspected bacterial infection. Using this medicine in such cases does not benefit the patient and increases the risk of developing treatment-resistant bacteria.
  • If you have a condition known as Phenylketonuria. These tablets may contain aspartame, which can worsen the condition.
  • If you are a neonate. Intamox O tablet's dose should be monitored in neonates under three months because their kidney function is not yet well developed to eliminate this medicine. It can cause serious adverse effects.

Side effects

  • Side effects of Intamox O tablets include:
  • Headache
  • Loose stools
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash

Dosage

Overdose

In a small number of patients, overdose of Intamox O tablets has caused Interstitial nephritis (swollen filtrating tubes in the kidney), which resulted in kidney failure. Kidney stones due to high urea in blood, in some cases leading to kidney failure, have also been reported after Intamox O medicine overdose in adults and children. In case of an overdose, adequate fluid intake should be maintained to lower the risk of kidney stones. Kidney impairment can be reversed if the Intamox O tablets are discontinued. Also, high blood levels of this medicine may occur more readily in patients with impaired kidney function. In such cases, consult your doctor and seek treatment as soon as possible.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of Intamox O Tablet, take it as soon as you recall. If you remember when it is already time to take the next dose of Intamox O tablet, take the scheduled dose and skip the missed one. If you have any doubts about the dosage of Intamox O Tablet, talk to your doctor. Do not take both tablets together, as it can lead to unwanted side effects.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Intamox O Tablet contains Amoxicillin. It is similar to penicillin in its antibacterial action against susceptible bacteria. It works during the stage of active multiplication of the bacteria. It acts by stopping the cell wall synthesis that causes the death of the bacteria. Some bacteria develop resistance to Amoxicillin. The resistance mechanism is primarily through enzymes called beta-lactamases produced by the bacteria. They break the structure of amoxicillin, making it inactive.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • It is not recommended to take Probenecid medication along with Intamox O tablets. Probenecid decreases the elimination of amoxicillin by kidneys. It may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin.
  • Using Intamox O tablets while you are on oral anticoagulants or blood thinners like warfarin is not advised. They may cause prolongation of prothrombin time (test measures how long it takes for a clot to form in a blood sample). It increases the risk of bleeding. Dose adjustment is necessary.
  • Using Allopurinol and Intamox O tablets at the same time can increase the incidence of rashes in patients receiving both medications as compared to patients receiving them alone. It is unknown whether this is due to Allopurinol or the high urea present in these patients.
  • Intamax O tablets lower the potency of oral contraceptive pills (combined estrogen and progesterone contraceptive pills). It is advised to use other modes of contraception.
  • Using other types of antibiotics such as Chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines may interfere with the antibacterial effects of Intamox O tablets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Kidney function is incompletely developed in neonates and young infants, so the elimination of Intomax O tablets may be delayed. The dosing of Intomax O tablets should be modified in infants 12 weeks or younger.

Older adults over 65 respond differently from younger people. Please consult your doctor for the appropriate dose of the medicine.

This medicine is known to be excreted by the kidney, so the risk of toxic reactions to Intomax O tablets may be greater in persons with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor in such cases. The dose should be carefully monitored.
