Medical Description
Uses
- As per CDSCO and USFDA, Intamox O tablet is indicated for the treatment of infections due to designated bacteria.
- It is used in the treatment of various infections of the ear, nose, throat, genitourinary tract, skin and skin structure, and lower respiratory tract.
- It is used in combination with other medications for the treatment of H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.
Contraindications
- If you have a history of serious hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or other similar antibiotics (e.g., penicillins or cephalosporins). Serious allergic reactions require immediate emergency treatment with supportive measures.
- If you have severe kidney impairment, the dose should be reduced.
- If you are diagnosed with Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea. It has been reported with the use of nearly all antibiotics, including Intamox O tablet and may range in severity from mild diarrhoea to fatal colitis. Treatment with antibiotics alters the colon's normal flora, leading to overgrowth of C. difficile bacteria.
- If you are diagnosed with mononucleosis infection. Using Intamox O tablets can cause an itchy and red skin rash.
- If you are not correctly diagnosed with a suspected bacterial infection. Using this medicine in such cases does not benefit the patient and increases the risk of developing treatment-resistant bacteria.
- If you have a condition known as Phenylketonuria. These tablets may contain aspartame, which can worsen the condition.
- If you are a neonate. Intamox O tablet's dose should be monitored in neonates under three months because their kidney function is not yet well developed to eliminate this medicine. It can cause serious adverse effects.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- It is not recommended to take Probenecid medication along with Intamox O tablets. Probenecid decreases the elimination of amoxicillin by kidneys. It may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin.
- Using Intamox O tablets while you are on oral anticoagulants or blood thinners like warfarin is not advised. They may cause prolongation of prothrombin time (test measures how long it takes for a clot to form in a blood sample). It increases the risk of bleeding. Dose adjustment is necessary.
- Using Allopurinol and Intamox O tablets at the same time can increase the incidence of rashes in patients receiving both medications as compared to patients receiving them alone. It is unknown whether this is due to Allopurinol or the high urea present in these patients.
- Intamax O tablets lower the potency of oral contraceptive pills (combined estrogen and progesterone contraceptive pills). It is advised to use other modes of contraception.
- Using other types of antibiotics such as Chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines may interfere with the antibacterial effects of Intamox O tablets.
