Medical Description

GD Safe Dry dry syrup is an oral antibiotic used under specialist supervision for selected severe bacterial infections, especially susceptible gram-negative infections involving the intestines. It contains colistin sulphate. Colistin damages the outer membrane of susceptible bacteria, so they cannot survive, and when used orally it acts mainly in the gut. The dry syrup is mixed with sterile water, shaken and measured for oral use, and may be prescribed for selected intestinal decontamination or before stomach surgery.

Uses

  • Severe resistant bacterial infections: Treats selected serious infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria when other antibiotics may not work.
  • Intestinal bacterial infections: May treat certain diarrhoea or dysentery caused by susceptible bacteria in the gut.
  • Gut decontamination: May reduce harmful intestinal bacteria in selected critically ill patients or before stomach surgery when prescribed by a specialist.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use GD Safe Dry dry syrup. Do not use it for an infection unless it has been prescribed for that infection. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, muscle weakness, nerve problems or a history of breathing difficulty.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Colistin sulphate may irritate the digestive tract and cause queasiness. Seek medical advice if nausea is severe or persistent.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may cause vomiting. Seek urgent advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Loss of appetite: You may feel less interested in food while using this medicine. Seek advice if poor intake causes weakness or dehydration.
  • Stomach upset: Colistin may cause abdominal discomfort while the gut adjusts. Contact your doctor if pain becomes severe or persistent.
  • Diarrhoea: Loose stools may occur during treatment. Tell your doctor promptly if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much colistin may cause severe weakness, tingling, dizziness, reduced urination, kidney problems or breathing difficulty. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Colistin sulphate binds to and disrupts the outer membrane of susceptible bacteria. The damaged membrane can no longer protect the bacteria, so they die. When used by mouth, its main action is in the gut.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way GD Safe Dry dry syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the doctor about other antibiotics and medicines that can affect kidney function because kidney problems may increase, and muscle-relaxing medicines or medicines used during anaesthesia because muscle weakness and breathing problems may worsen.
