Interactions with other medicines

  • Sodium valproate, when given with other antipsychotics, MAO inhibitors, antidepressants and benzodiazepines, may potentiate the effects of other psychotropics
  • Valproic acid, when co-administered with olanzapine, decreases its serum lithium levels
  • Phenobarbital plasma concentration levels increase when administered with sodium valproate
  • Sodium valproate increases primidone plasma levels with exacerbation of its adverse effects
  • Phenytoin total plasma concentration decreases when co-administered with sodium valproate
  • Concomitant use of carbamazepine may potentiate its toxic effect
  • Zidovudine toxicity may occur when taken with sodium valproate
  • Severe skin rashes may be observed when sodium valproate is used with lamotrigine as it reduces the metabolism of lamotrigine and increases its mean half-life
