Medical Description

Eloxa solution for infusion is a specialist treatment used with fluorouracil and leucovorin for certain colorectal tumors, including treatment after surgery and advanced disease. Its active ingredient is oxaliplatin, a platinum-based medicine that damages the genetic material of abnormal cells. This stops those cells from copying themselves and can slow their growth. Eloxa infusion is diluted and given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic under specialist supervision. It is not a self-administered treatment.

Uses

  • Advanced colorectal cancer: Eloxa infusion is combined with fluorouracil and leucovorin to treat colorectal cancer that has spread or is no longer controlled by earlier treatment.
  • After colon cancer surgery: In selected patients, Eloxa infusion forms part of follow-up treatment after complete removal of the primary tumor, to lower the chance of return.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or to other platinum-based medicines, do not receive Eloxa infusion. Tell your doctor before treatment if you have had a severe reaction to an infusion.

Side effects

  • Numbness or tingling: Oxaliplatin can temporarily disturb nerves, often causing pins and needles or sensitivity to cold; report persistent symptoms to the oncology team.
  • Nausea and vomiting: The infusion can upset the stomach during or after treatment; use the prescribed anti-sickness medicine and seek help if fluids cannot stay down.
  • Low blood cell counts: Treatment can reduce infection-fighting and clotting cells, causing fever, unusual bruising or tiredness; contact the oncology team urgently for fever.
  • Infusion reaction: An immune reaction may cause flushing, rash, chest tightness, breathing difficulty or swelling during or after infusion; get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or facial swelling.
  • Diarrhoea: Fluorouracil and oxaliplatin treatment can irritate the bowel and cause fluid loss; contact the treatment team for severe diarrhoea, dizziness or blood in stool.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Eloxa in pregnancy unless your specialist decides there is no safer appropriate option. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. Use effective contraception as advised during treatment.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Do not breastfeed during treatment with Eloxa unless your oncology team specifically advises otherwise. Ask when breastfeeding can safely restart.

Driving

Driving

Eloxa may cause dizziness, weakness, nausea or vision changes. Do not drive or use machinery if you feel affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is known. Avoid alcohol if it worsens nausea, dizziness or dehydration, and follow your oncology team's advice.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Eloxa solution for infusion is diluted and administered into a vein under specialist supervision, together with the other medicines prescribed in your treatment plan. Tell the infusion team immediately about pain, burning, rash, chest tightness, dizziness or breathing difficulty during the infusion.

Storage and disposal

Eloxa infusion must be stored, prepared and disposed of by trained healthcare staff. Protect it from light, do not freeze it and follow special handling procedures for cytotoxic medicines. Unused solution must not be discarded with household waste.

Quick Tips

  • Tell your oncology team about numbness, tingling or unusual sensitivity to cold.
  • Avoid close contact with people who have infections and report fever promptly.
  • Drink fluids as advised, particularly if vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
  • Use contraception as advised by your oncology team during treatment.
  • Attend blood tests and appointments so your treatment can be checked safely.
  • Do not receive vaccines, supplements or other medicines without discussing them with your oncology team.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe suppression of blood cells, nerve problems, infection, diarrhoea or other serious reactions. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Oxaliplatin changes into active platinum compounds in the body. These compounds attach to the genetic material inside abnormal cells and form links that stop those cells from copying their instructions. This can slow or destroy abnormal cells. Fluorouracil and leucovorin are used with oxaliplatin because the combination can work better than either medicine alone.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Eloxa infusion works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the oncology team about medicines that can affect blood counts or bleeding, medicines that can harm the kidneys or nerves, and other treatments for cancer. Fluorouracil and leucovorin are part of the prescribed combination and must be managed by the oncology team.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interactions are known. Follow the nutrition and fluid advice given by your oncology team, especially if nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
