Medical Description

Elmox LB tablet is a combination antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections. It contains amoxicillin and dicloxacillin, penicillin-type medicines that stop susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, plus lactobacillus, a probiotic bacterium included to support intestinal balance. The antibiotics act against bacteria, while lactobacillus does not replace their infection-fighting action. Elmox tablet is taken by mouth only when prescribed for the diagnosed infection. The combination is selected only when the prescriber considers these ingredients appropriate.

Uses

  • Susceptible bacterial infections: The antibiotics amoxicillin and dicloxacillin stop bacteria from growing, so this combination may be prescribed for selected respiratory, skin, soft-tissue, dental, or urinary infections.
  • Intestinal balance during antibiotic treatment: Lactobacillus is included as a probiotic and may support normal gut bacteria, but it does not treat the infection.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, penicillin antibiotics, or related cephalosporin antibiotics, do not use Elmox tablet. Tell your doctor about a previous severe reaction to an antibiotic, kidney or liver disease, or a history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek medical advice before use if you have ever developed a widespread rash after amoxicillin or another penicillin.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Amoxicillin or dicloxacillin can upset the stomach early in treatment; seek help if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal intestinal bacteria and cause loose stools; contact your doctor promptly if stools are bloody, persistent, or accompanied by fever or cramps.
  • Rash: A new itchy or spreading rash may show sensitivity to a penicillin antibiotic; get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use Elmox LB tablet only when your doctor considers it necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Small amounts of the antibiotics may pass into breast milk and may cause loose stools, oral thrush, or sensitivity in the baby.

Driving

Driving

Elmox LB tablet is not usually expected to affect driving, but do not drive if you feel dizzy, weak, or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol has no specific established interaction with Elmox tablet, but it may worsen nausea, stomach upset, or dizziness. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Use Elmox tablet exactly as prescribed and do not crush or chew it unless your doctor or pharmacist says otherwise. Follow the food instructions given for your formulation. Do not share it or use it for a different illness, and do not stop the prescribed course without speaking to your doctor unless a serious allergic reaction requires urgent care.

Storage and disposal

Store Elmox LB tablet in its original pack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use tablets that are damaged or past their expiry date. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused tablets.

Quick Tips

  • Use Elmox tablet only for the infection diagnosed by your doctor.
  • Do not share this medicine with another person, even if their symptoms look similar.
  • Tell your doctor about any previous allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Drink enough fluids unless your doctor has restricted them.
  • Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or throat swelling.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking more than prescribed may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, allergic symptoms, or kidney-related problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The antibiotics amoxicillin and dicloxacillin are penicillin-type medicines. They interfere with bacterial cell-wall formation, which prevents susceptible bacteria from growing. Lactobacillus is a probiotic included to support the balance of microorganisms in the intestine during antibiotic treatment; it does not kill the bacteria causing the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Elmox tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention blood thinners, methotrexate, probenecid, other antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and medicines that affect kidney function. Penicillins may increase methotrexate exposure or change blood-thinner effects, probenecid may increase penicillin levels, and other antibiotics may add side effects. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can reduce the reliability of oral contraceptives.
