Medical Description

Doltol ointment is used for temporary relief of local muscle and joint pain, stiffness, sprains, strains and minor soft-tissue discomfort. Its pain balm combination contains diclofenac, menthol, methyl salicylate and linseed oil. Diclofenac helps reduce local pain and inflammation, menthol gives cooling, methyl salicylate gives warmth and local pain relief, while linseed oil helps condition the skin and spread the formulation. Doltol ointment is applied to healthy skin only and is for external use, so it should not replace assessment of severe or persistent pain.

How does this medicine work?

Diclofenac reduces the formation of body chemicals that contribute to pain and inflammation. Menthol activates a cooling sensation that can distract from deeper discomfort. Methyl salicylate produces warmth and acts as a local pain reliever. Linseed oil helps condition the skin and may support spreading and absorption of the formulation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Doltol ointment works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them if you use oral anti-inflammatory pain medicines, aspirin, blood thinners, steroids or other products containing diclofenac or salicylates, because absorption through skin may add to irritation or bleeding risk.
