Medical Description

Cyclotec capsule is an antibiotic used with other prescribed medicines for tuberculosis that is resistant to standard treatment. Tuberculosis is an infection that usually affects the lungs but can also involve other parts of the body. The capsule contains cycloserine, which prevents tuberculosis bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive. Cyclotec capsule is taken by mouth only under a specialist's treatment plan, and the prescribed plan should be followed unless the doctor changes it.

Uses

  • Tuberculosis resistant to standard treatment: Cycloserine helps control tuberculosis when the bacteria do not respond adequately to standard treatment, including disease affecting the lungs or other parts of the body.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take it. Do not use cycloserine if you have uncontrolled seizures, severe mental health symptoms or severe kidney disease unless a tuberculosis specialist decides it is necessary. Tell your doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use and any history of serious nervous system problems.

Side effects

  • Dizziness: Cycloserine can affect the nervous system and make you feel unsteady. Sit down before standing and avoid driving if balance or concentration is affected.
  • Memory problems: The medicine may make it harder to remember recent events or instructions. Tell your doctor if this interferes with daily activities.
  • Confusion: Cycloserine may cause unusual thoughts, difficulty concentrating or confusion. Tell your doctor promptly if you feel mentally changed.
  • Sleep problems: Difficulty sleeping or disturbing dreams may occur during treatment. Report persistent sleeplessness so your treatment can be reviewed.
  • Mood or behaviour changes: Cycloserine can cause irritability, anxiety or very low mood. Seek urgent medical help for severe behaviour changes or thoughts of self-harm.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Available information does not show a clear risk, but human pregnancy data are limited. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or may be pregnant so treatment can be reviewed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Cycloserine may pass into breast milk and could affect the baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding; treatment should continue only when the expected benefit outweighs the possible risk.

Driving

Driving

Cyclotec capsule may cause dizziness, sleep problems or confusion. Do not drive or operate machinery if your concentration or coordination is affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol while using Cyclotec capsule because it can worsen dizziness, confusion, sleep problems and other nervous system effects.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Cyclotec capsule may be taken with or without food. Take it exactly as prescribed and do not stop the tuberculosis treatment plan early unless your doctor tells you to. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy or mentally affected.

Storage and disposal

Store Cyclotec capsule in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack and out of reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date. Dispose of unused medicine through a safe collection service.

Quick Tips

  • Take Cyclotec capsule exactly as part of the tuberculosis treatment plan prescribed by your specialist.
  • Avoid alcohol because it may worsen nervous system effects.
  • Tell your doctor immediately about mood changes, confusion, tremors or unusual movements.
  • Do not drive if you feel dizzy, sleepy or unable to concentrate.
  • Keep all tuberculosis follow-up appointments and laboratory checks.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much cycloserine can cause severe dizziness, confusion, agitation, seizures or other nervous system symptoms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cycloserine is an antibiotic that blocks the formation of the protective cell wall surrounding tuberculosis bacteria. Without this covering, the bacteria cannot survive and multiply normally.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Cyclotec works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, ethionamide and isoniazid can increase nervous system effects when used with cycloserine. Also mention medicines for seizures, mental health conditions, medicines that affect the nervous system and medicines that affect kidney function.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol during treatment because it can increase dizziness, confusion, sleep problems and other nervous system effects. No specific food interaction is known.
