Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or trying to conceive. Your doctor will weigh the seizure-control benefits and possible risks before recommending lacosamide.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ask whether lacosamide is suitable for you and your infant.

Driving

Driving

Lacosamide may cause dizziness, sleepiness, or blurred vision. Do not drive or use machinery if you have these effects.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol unless your doctor says it is safe, because it can worsen dizziness and sleepiness.

Directions for Use

Take the extended-release tablet exactly as prescribed. Swallow it whole with water, with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break it, because this can change how the medicine is released. Take it consistently as advised and do not stop it without speaking to your doctor.

Storage and disposal

Keep the tablets in the original pack, away from heat and moisture. Keep them out of reach of children. Do not use tablets after their expiry date. Ask a pharmacist about safe disposal of unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Take the extended-release tablet exactly as prescribed.
  • Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush or chew it.
  • Avoid driving if you feel dizzy, sleepy, or have blurred vision.
  • Do not stop treatment suddenly without medical advice.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much lacosamide may cause severe dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, blurred vision, fainting, or heart rhythm problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Lacosamide helps stabilise electrical activity in the brain. By reducing the abnormal nerve signals that can trigger a seizure, it helps lower the chance of partial-onset seizure episodes.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way lacosamide works or increase unwanted effects. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, mention other medicines for seizures, medicines that affect heart rhythm, and medicines that cause sleepiness or dizziness.

Interactions with food items

Lacosamide can be taken with or without food. Alcohol may increase dizziness or sleepiness, so ask your doctor whether it should be avoided.
