Medical Description

Colsprin tablet is used for short-term relief of mild to moderate headache, pain, fever and inflammation. It contains a combination of aspirin, calcium carbonate and citric acid. The aspirin provides the main pain-relieving, fever-reducing and anti-inflammatory effect, while calcium carbonate can neutralise stomach acid and citric acid is part of the formulation. The tablet is taken by mouth with water, preferably with food or milk when advised, and should be used only as directed by a doctor. People with aspirin-triggered breathing problems or bleeding disorders should avoid it unless their doctor advises otherwise.

  • Fever: Aspirin lowers the body chemicals that contribute to fever, helping reduce raised temperature during suitable short-term use.
  • Inflammation: Aspirin reduces inflammation-related swelling and tenderness by lowering the body chemicals that drive these symptoms.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Colsprin tablet during pregnancy unless your doctor specifically prescribes it. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, because aspirin may affect the baby and increase bleeding risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Aspirin can pass into breast milk, so your doctor will decide whether Colsprin tablet is suitable or whether another option is safer.

Driving

Driving

Colsprin tablet is not usually expected to affect driving, but do not drive if you feel dizzy, unwell or unable to concentrate.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it can increase stomach irritation and the risk of stomach bleeding.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Take Colsprin tablet with food or milk if your doctor advises this to reduce stomach irritation. Do not combine it with another aspirin-containing or anti-inflammatory pain medicine unless your doctor approves.

Storage and disposal

Store Colsprin tablet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date. Dispose of unused tablets safely according to local advice.

Quick Tips

  • Take Colsprin tablet with food or milk if it irritates your stomach.
  • Do not combine it with another aspirin-containing or anti-inflammatory pain medicine without medical advice.
  • Avoid alcohol because it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
  • Get urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain or breathing difficulty.
  • Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers with fever or a viral illness unless a doctor advises it.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much aspirin may cause ringing in the ears, vomiting, fast breathing, confusion or bleeding. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The aspirin in Colsprin tablet reduces the formation of body chemicals that cause pain, fever and inflammation, and it also makes blood cells less likely to clump. This latter action can increase bleeding risk. The calcium carbonate neutralises acid in the stomach. The citric acid is included as part of the formulation and is not the main pain-relieving ingredient.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Colsprin works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, if you are taking blood thinners or other medicines that reduce clotting, other anti-inflammatory painkillers, steroid medicines, methotrexate, medicines for high blood pressure, medicines for diabetes, thyroid medicines, iron or certain antibiotics, tell your doctor. Blood thinners, anti-inflammatory painkillers and steroid medicines can increase bleeding or stomach irritation. Aspirin can increase methotrexate side effects and may change blood sugar control, while calcium carbonate can reduce absorption of thyroid medicines, iron and some antibiotics. Some medicines for high blood pressure may work less well.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can increase stomach irritation and the risk of bleeding with aspirin. Avoid alcohol while using Colsprin tablet unless your doctor says it is safe.
