Medical Description

Cal Cm is a mineral injection used to treat low blood calcium levels. Its active ingredient calcium gluconate helps restore normal calcium levels in the body to prevent serious complications.

Uses

  • Low blood calcium levels
  • High blood potassium levels
  • Magnesium toxicity
  • Emergency heart rhythm problems

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use this injection if you already have high calcium levels in your blood, as it can cause serious mineral toxicity. Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, as your kidneys may not filter excess minerals properly. Tell your doctor if you have sarcoidosis, as you may absorb too much calcium. Tell your doctor if the patient is a newborn baby who is being given ceftriaxone (an antibiotic), as this injection must not be given together with or soon after ceftriaxone through the same intravenous line, since the combination can form dangerous particles in the blood.

  • Injection site burning
  • Injection site swelling
  • Numbness
  • Flushing
  • Nausea

Driving

Driving

Since this medicine is given as an injection in a hospital setting, driving restrictions would be determined by your doctor based on your condition and the reason for treatment.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific interaction with alcohol, but consult your doctor before consuming alcohol during treatment.

Directions for Use

Cal Cm injection is given slowly into a vein by a doctor or healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The injection must be administered very slowly, as rapid injection can cause serious side effects like sudden drops in blood pressure. Notify your nurse immediately if you feel burning, stinging, coldness, or swelling around the injection site.

Storage and disposal

This medicine will be stored and handled by the healthcare facility administering it. Store at appropriate temperature as directed by your healthcare provider. Inspect the liquid before use - do not inject if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or contains particles.

Quick Tips

  • The effects of this injection last about 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Attend all scheduled blood and urine tests so your doctor can track your mineral levels and prevent them from getting too high.
  • If you require repeated injections, your doctor will rotate injection sites to reduce the risk of vein irritation.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience muscle weakness, kidney issues, constipation, or abnormal heart rhythms.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

Since this injection is usually given by a healthcare professional in a clinical setting, it is unlikely that you will miss a dose. If you miss a scheduled appointment for your infusion, contact your clinic or healthcare provider immediately to reschedule. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Calcium gluconate quickly raises calcium levels in the blood to stop muscle spasms and cramps. It also protects the heart from dangerous rhythm changes caused by high potassium levels.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can interact with this injection. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking. In particular, combining this injection with digoxin (a heart medicine) can severely increase the risk of dangerous irregular heartbeats. Thiazide diuretics (water pills) may affect how this medicine works. This injection must not be given together with or soon after ceftriaxone (an antibiotic) through the same intravenous line, as this can form harmful particles in the blood; the risk is highest in newborn babies and fatal outcomes have occurred. Inform your doctor before starting this treatment.
