Description

Betadine 10 solution is a topical antiseptic containing povidone-iodine as its active ingredient. It is primarily used as a first-aid measure for cuts, burns, minor wounds, scrapes, and ulcers to treat and prevent infections. The active ingredient, povidone-iodine, works by entering microbial cells, oxidizing key components, and thereby causing cell death. This mechanism makes it useful against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, providing robust protection against infection.

You should use Betadine 10 solution exactly as recommended by your doctor for the duration they decide. It is essential not to stop applying it on your own, even if the wound appears to be healing. It is a topical preparation for external use only. Gently clean the affected area, let it dry, wash your hands before and after application, and apply a small amount to the affected area. If there is no improvement in your infection or wound after 7 days of use, or if you experience allergies or skin reactions, you must contact your doctor.

There are certain conditions where this medicine should not be used. If you have a known allergy to povidone-iodine or any other ingredient in the solution, or if you have a thyroid problem like goiter or Hashimoto's disease, you should not use it. It is also contraindicated if you are taking lithium-containing medication. Use of Betadine 10 solution is not recommended during pregnancy. It should be avoided by lactating mothers as it can increase iodine levels in breastmilk, potentially causing thyroid-related disorders in a breastfed infant.

While it is generally safe for external use, prolonged, excessive application, especially on large skin areas or burnt/cracked skin, is not advised, as it may lead to iodine absorption in potentially toxic doses. Since it is applied externally, it is less likely to interact with other oral medicines. However, you should let your doctor know about any other medicines you are taking, or if you are scheduled for a routine thyroid lab test, since this medicine may affect the results.
