Medical Description
Benadryl cough syrup is a medication used to treat coughs and colds. It provides relief from symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, a sore throat, and watery eyes. The active ingredients of Benadryl syrup are diphenhydramine, ammonium chloride, and sodium citrate. Benadryl cough syrup works by blocking the effects of allergens and relieving symptoms such as a runny nose and watery eyes. This medicine also thins mucus, making it easier to cough up.
It is important to take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Before use, shake the bottle well. Use a measuring cup or spoon to ensure the exact quantity. Do not consume directly from the bottle. Benadryl syrup should not be used for children below 4 years of age without medical advice. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and keep a gap of at least 4 hours between doses.
It is also important not to take this medicine if you are allergic to any of its components. Before starting Benadryl syrup, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding and provide a complete medical history. Additionally, inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are currently taking.
According to the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry, cough and cold medications should not be prescribed or dispensed to children under two years of age. Quick Tips
- Benadryl cough syrup is a medication that helps to relieve both dry and chesty coughs. Coughing is a natural way for the body to clear the airways of irritants such as mucus, allergens, or smoke to prevent infections.
- Benadryl cough syrup contains four active ingredients: Ammonium chloride (an expectorant), Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an antihistamine), Sodium citrate (a mucolytic), and ethanol (a preservative). Ammonium chloride increases airway fluid volume, reducing mucus stickiness. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride blocks histamine, a substance causing allergic reactions, providing relief from allergy symptoms. Sodium citrate thins and loosens phlegm in the lungs, making it easier to cough out.
- Take Benadryl cough syrup as prescribed by a doctor and for the duration specified based on the individual's medical condition. The common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nervousness, stomach pain, diarrhoea, or constipation, which are generally temporary and do not require medical attention. However, persistent or worsening side effects should be reported to a healthcare professional.
- Individuals who are allergic to Benadryl cough syrup or any of its components should inform their doctor. Benadryl syrup is not recommended for children under two years old unless a doctor advises. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before using the syrup. Caution is advised for elderly patients due to an increased risk of side effects. Driving is discouraged if experiencing dizziness. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may enhance drowsiness or dizziness.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Benadryl cough syrup may interact with other medicines. Discuss with your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbal preparations you are taking. Also, you should inform your doctor if you have a planned surgery or vaccination schedule.
- Benadryl cough syrup should not be used concomitantly with MAO inhibitors like Selegiline and Isocarboxazid (used for psychiatric illness). It produces a condition called serotonin syndrome, which is a life-threatening condition that can occur rapidly due to a build-up of an excessive amount of serotonin in the body. In serotonin syndrome, a person may experience high body temperature, high blood pressure, fast heart rate, excitability, tremor (shakiness), and sweating. In such a situation, patients should rush to a nearby hospital immediately.
- Concomitant use of this syrup with other anti-allergic medicines like Cetirizine, medicines like Atropine, Benztropine (used to treat travel or motion sickness, stomach cramps, and Parkinson’s disease), opioids like Codeine, Morphine (to relieve severe painful conditions), medicines like Propranolol, Metoprolol (used to treat heart problems, to decrease blood pressure) and may alter the effects of this syrup.
- Other medicines like Amitriptyline, Doxepin, and Ephedrine should be used with caution along with this syrup.
