How does this medicine work?

Azithromycin works by entering bacterial cells and blocking their ability to produce proteins essential for growth and survival. This stops bacteria from multiplying and allows your immune system to clear the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect how azithromycin works. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. Particular care is needed with vandetanib and antacids containing aluminium or magnesium, which may reduce effectiveness. Certain heart medications and anticoagulants may require monitoring.

Interactions with food items

No significant food interactions. You may take this medicine with or without food as it is administered by injection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Injections work faster than tablets and are used for serious infections or when patients cannot swallow tablets. The medicine reaches the bloodstream immediately and acts quickly.
Completing the full course prevents the infection from returning and helps prevent antibiotic resistance, where bacteria become resistant to the medicine.
