Medical Description

ATR-AP capsule contains a combination of aspirin and atorvastatin as active substances. It is used for the treatment of high levels of lipids (fats) in the body. ATR-AP capsules should be taken in the exact dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine on your own. Before starting ATR-AP capsule, inform your doctor if you are pregnant/breastfeeding and about your complete medical history.

Uses

  • ATR-AP capsule is used for the treatment of high levels of lipids (fats) in the body associated with the build-up of fats in the blood vessel wall that supplies blood to the heart.
  • It is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to atorvastatin, aspirin or any other ingredients of ATR-AP capsules.
  • If you are allergic to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, salicylic acid compounds or prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors. If you are not sure what these medicines are, please confirm with your doctor.
  • If you have a liver or kidney disorder.
  • If you have or have a history of recurrent peptic ulcer and/or gastric /intestinal bleeding or other kinds of bleeding.
  • If you are likely to bleed due to a blood clotting disorder such as haemophilia and thrombocytopenia.
  • If you have gout.
  • If you are taking a medicine called methotrexate.
  • If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant.

  • You develop skin rashes or mucosal lesions after taking ATR-AP capsules.
  • You are elderly or diabetic.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

  • Take ATR-AP capsules as a whole with sufficient water.
  • This medicine can be taken with or without food.
  • Always take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not cut, break or chew the medicine.
  • Do not consume more than the prescribed dose.
  • Do not discontinue the medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.

Storage and disposal

  • Store ATR-AP capsules in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Overdose

  • The symptoms of an overdose of ATR-AP capsules include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, ringing in the ears, headache, vertigo, sweating and warm feeling in the hands and feet.
  • If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

  • If you have missed taking any dose of ATR-AP capsules, take it as soon as you remember.
  • If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
  • Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How Does It Work?

  • ATR-AP capsule contains a combination of aspirin and atorvastatin as active substances.
  • Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It inhibits a substance called HMG-CoA reductase which is responsible for the formation of low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol).
  • Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that inactivates a chemical called cyclooxygenase which is responsible for platelet aggregation. This prevents the formation of platelet aggregates (blood clots) and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way ATR-AP capsule works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Inform your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • ATR-AP capsules should not be used along with methotrexate (used for management of cancer).
  • The risk of skeletal muscle abnormalities is increased when ATR-AP capsule is taken together with other medicines used to lower blood lipid levels (fenofibrate), treat vitamin B3 deficiency (niacin), prevent organ rejection after a transplant (cyclosporine), HIV (ritonavir), treat bacterial infections (clarithromycin) and fungal infections (itraconazole).
  • Particular care should be taken when you are taking medicines used to manage tuberculosis (rifampicin), heart failure (digoxin), birth control (oral contraceptives), diabetes (glimepiride), mental disorders (lithium), fits/seizures (valproate) and acidity (antacids).
  • The use of ATR-AP capsules with probenecid (used to treat gout) should be avoided.
  • The risk of bleeding is increased when this medicine is used along with warfarin, heparin, phenindione, clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots) and corticosteroids like prednisone (used to treat inflammation), other NSAIDs like ibuprofen (used to treat pain and inflammation).
  • There is an increased risk of kidney damage when ATR-AP capsule is used with diuretics (used to treat fluid accumulation), anti-hypertensives (used to manage high blood pressure) or medicines used to prevent organ rejection after a transplant (cyclosporine).
  • The use of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like acetazolamide (used to reduce pressure in the eyes) with this medicine may result in severe acidosis and increased central nervous system toxicity.

Interactions with food items

Grapefruit or grapefruit juice should be avoided during treatment with ATR-AP capsules as it may increase the levels of this medicine in the body.
