Medical Description

Anxipose is a prescription medication with the active ingredient being Lorazepam. It is primarily used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, and seizure disorders (epilepsy). Anxiety is a condition characterised by increased worry and fear about routine situations. Anxiety can present with increased heart rate, sweating, restlessness, trembling, increased rate of breathing etc. Panic disorder is also a type of anxiety disorder with a feeling of loss of control and fear. It is important to note that Anxipose has habit-forming potential. It also has the potential to be misused. Anxipose should be taken as prescribed. The entire course should be completed. Stopping the tablet suddenly is not advisable as it can cause withdrawal symptoms. Taking the tablet at the same time every day is advisable for maximum efficacy.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with known Lorazepam hypersensitivity or allergies to any medication components.
  • Anxipose is contraindicated in patients with serious liver disease.

  • This medication should not be used in patients with lung disorders such as respiratory insufficiency, and obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Anxipose is not advisable for use in patients with myasthenia gravis, a disorder that affects muscle strength and respiration.

Pregnancy

Lorazepam is unsafe in pregnancy as it has the potential to affect the foetus. It is a class D medicine. Class D means Use in life-threatening emergencies when no safer medicine is available. Inform your doctor regarding your pregnancy or intention to conceive.

Breast Feeding

Lorazepam is considered unsafe during breastfeeding. It is excreted in breast milk and may affect the infant adversely.

Driving

This medication can cause side effects such as drowsiness, sleepiness, fatigue, decreased coordination, dizziness etc. Hence driving and use of heavy machinery are not recommended.

Alcohol

Using Lorazepam with other CNS depressants, like alcohol, increases the risk of slowed breathing, low blood pressure, and death. It is strictly contraindicated.

  • Swallow this medication as a whole. Don’t crush, chew or break this tablet.
  • Consult your doctor before stopping. Stopping the pill suddenly can cause side effects.
  • Do not change the dose of the tablet unless advised by a medical professional.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool and dry place at a temperature below 30’C away from direct light and moisture. Do not use the medicine after the date of expiration. Keep the tablets away from children and pets. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. Dispose of it with biomedical waste only.

Dosage

Overdose

The overdose symptoms develop rapidly. Initial symptoms may include excessive sleepiness, double vision, slurring of speech and poor motor functions. This may proceed to respiratory failure, fall in BP and heart rate, coma, cardiac arrest and even death. Take the patient to a tertiary care centre in case of a suspected overdose.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of this tablet, it is advised to take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long, and it is almost time for the next dose, it is recommended to skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose of the tablet. Take it at the same time daily for optimal action.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

The active ingredient in Anxipose is lorazepam. Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine that acts on the brain pathways to increase the action of a chemical messenger called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and increases its activity. This results in sedation, calming effects, and muscle relaxation. These effects are beneficial in the treatment of anxiety. It is a sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agent. It starts acting faster than other similar medications.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • The use of this medication with opioids (like morphine, tramadol etc.) is contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma and death.
  • Anxipose should also not be used with other CNS depressants like alcohol can also cause similar effects and present life-threatening adverse effects.
  • It should not be used with clozapine, as it may produce marked sedation, excessive salivation, drop in BP, lack of muscle control, delirium, and respiratory arrest.
  • The concomitant use of Lorazepam and Valproate is not recommended as it increases the concentration of Lorazepam in blood, hence its side effects.
  • Anxipose should not be used with probenecid as it slows the excretion of the active ingredient.
  • Theophylline and aminophylline decrease the sedative effects of Lorazepam and other benzodiazepines.

  • This medication does not have any known interaction with food items.
