Medical Description
Anxil tablet is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorder and anxiety related to depression. Anxil tablet contains Alprazolam active ingredient that belongs to the benzodiazepine class of medications.
Anxiety disorder is a mental health condition characterised by episodes of fear, worry, nervousness, sweating and rapid heartbeat. In contrast, panic attacks are caused due to overstimulation of the nerve cells in the brain.
Anxil tablet works by balancing the chemical substance Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain that slows down the brain activity and produces a feeling of relaxation, calmness and induces sleep. Thus, it helps to reduce the feelings of worry and nervousness in patients with anxiety.
Anxil tablets should be taken in the prescribed dosage and duration as advised by your doctor. Anxil tablet should not be stopped suddenly without consulting the doctor, as it can lead to the clinical worsening of your condition or withdrawal-like symptoms
Uses
- As per CDSCO, Anxil tablet is used for the following:
- Treatment of anxiety disorder
- Treatment of the panic disorder
- Short-term treatment for anxiety related to depression
Contraindications
- It is contraindicated in the following cases:
- If you are allergic to any component of the Anxil tablet, i.e. Alprazolam
- If you are taking antidepressants, anti-anxiety or sedative medications
- If you are taking narcotic or opioid pain relievers
- If you see sudden mood changes, suicidal thoughts or other harmful behaviour
- If you have glaucoma (increases the fluid pressure in the eyes)
- If you have respiratory depression, which is a slow and steady decline in breathing.
- If you have a history of alcohol or substance addiction
- If you have liver or kidney problems
- If you have certain respiratory problems like asthma, sleep apnea, etc.

Talk to your doctor if
- You have any allergic reactions after taking the Anxil tablet.
- You have any self-harming thoughts or suicidal ideation.
- You experience any severe side effects persistently.
- You are an elderly patient over 65 years. These tablets may cause serious adverse effects due to slow metabolism in elderly patients.
- You have a history of mild or severe liver and kidney disease; this medicine may need a dose adjustment.
- You have stopped the medication and experiencing withdrawal symptoms like agitation, tremor, sweating, nausea and confusion.
- You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy during this medicine.
- You are using oral contraceptives.
- You are using any ayurvedic/herbal medicines, vitamins, and other health supplements.
Directions for Use
- Take the Anxil tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
- You can take Anxil tablet on a regular schedule with or without food or as prescribed, preferably at the same time every day.
- Swallow Anxil tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew this medicine.
- Do not take Anxil tablet with other medications as it may lead to medicine interaction.
- Do not stop taking the Anxil tablet suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
- Do not exceed the dosage on your own, as it can lead to overdose.
Storage and disposal
Store Anxil tablet away from sunlight in a cool and dry spot. Keep the medication out of reach from children and pet animals. Keep your tablets in their original packing until it is time to take them.
Do not flush Anxil tablet down into the toilet or throw it away via household waste. Dispose of the expired medicine immediately. Do not use it after the expiry date.
Dosage
Overdose
Anxil tablet overdose can cause symptoms like dizziness, extreme sleepiness, problems with balancing, confusion, difficulty speaking, liver problems, loss of consciousness and seizures. If you experience these overdose symptoms, immediately seek emergency medical treatment from a nearby hospital.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed a dose of the Anxil tablet, take it as you remember. However, If it is already time to take the next scheduled dose, take the next scheduled dose and skip the missed dose. Do not double doses as it can cause overdose side effects. Consult your doctor for more information.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Anxil tablets contain Alprazolam as an active ingredient. Alprazolam binds to GABA receptors in the brain, which increases GABA activity, a natural chemical messenger in the brain. Increased effects of GABA cause suppression of the excessive and abnormal electrical activity of the nerve cells in the brain, produce a feeling of relaxation and calmness and relieve anxiety symptoms.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your doctor about all your prescription and non-prescription medications, herbal products, vitamins and nutritional supplements you are consuming or plan to take as there is a chance of medicine interaction. Many medicines can interact with Anxil tablets, making them less effective or increasing the side effects. This includes:
- Anxil tablet interaction with antidepressants or mood-elevating medicines like fluoxetine and desipramine can cause increased side effects.
- Anxil tablet interaction with antihistamines (allergy medicines), Pain killers, such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine, sleeping pills, etc., can increase drowsiness and fatigue.
- Anxil tablet interaction with antifungal medications like fluconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole can reduce its effects.
- Anxil tablet interaction with oral contraceptives or birth control pills can reduce its effectiveness.
- Herbal Supplement St. John’s wort can also interact with the Anxil tablet.
Interactions with food items
- You can continue with the regular diet as food does not influence the effect of the Anxil tablet. However, you should avoid caffeine-containing diets.
