Medical Description
The composition of Althrocin Syp includes erythromycin, a macrolide class of antibiotic, that is used to treat specific bacterial infections.
Uses of Althrocin Syp
- Used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections.
Contraindications of Althrocin Syp
- Irregular heartbeat
- Kidney and liver problems
- Muscle diseases
- Patients allergic to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics such as clarithromycin
- Patients taking medicines containing astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine, colchicine
Side effects of Althrocin Syp
- Allergic reaction
- Dark urine
- Difficulty in breathing
- Hearing loss
- Irregular heartbeat and chest pain
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
- Tinnitus (ringing in ear)
- Liver and bladder problems causing yellow skin and eyes and also pale stool with dark urine
- Abnormal heart rhythm along with palpitations
- Vomiting and irritation in case of infants below 1 year of age
- Visual impairment or blurred vision

Pregnancy

A:
If taken during pregnancy, Erythromycin can cause liver damage. Hence it must be avoided.
Breast Feeding

Can I take Althrocin Syp while breastfeeding?
A:
A small amount of Erythromycin is known to pass into breast milk, but this small amount is not found to affect the baby. However, the doctor will prescribe this medicine during pregnancy only if its benefits outweigh the risks. Keep a check on the irritability, diarrhoea or diaper rash in such a scenario.
Driving

Can I drive if I have consumed Althrocin Syp?

You can drive if you have had the syrup, as its intake does not affect your driving ability.
Alcohol

Alcohol delays the absorption of Althrocin Syp and hence must be avoided.

- The syrup should not be consumed by patients with liver problems or those who are taking any medicines that can cause liver disorders, patients with myasthenia gravis and those consuming colchicine.

Interactions with other medicines
Althrocin Syp interacts with erythromycin amiodarone, astemizole/cisapride, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, domperidone, terfenadine and simvastatin, and can cause severe heart problems in such scenarios.The medicine also interacts with clindamycin and digoxin.

Food reduces erythromycin absorption. Therefore, it is advisable to take Althrocin Syp on an empty stomach either 30 minutes before or 2 hours after the meal.
