Medical Description

Alphared injection is used to manage anaemia linked with chronic kidney disease or chemotherapy treatment. It contains recombinant human erythropoietin alfa, a laboratory-made form of a natural body signal that prompts the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. By increasing red blood cell production, it can help address low red blood cell levels in these conditions. This injection is given under the skin or into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, as prescribed.

Uses

  • Anaemia from chronic kidney disease: Supports red blood cell production when the kidneys do not make enough of the natural signal needed for this process.
  • Anaemia caused by chemotherapy: Helps manage low red blood cell levels that occur during certain cancer treatments.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Alphared injection. Do not use it if your high blood pressure is not controlled or if you have had pure red cell aplasia after treatment with an erythropoietin medicine. Tell your doctor about heart disease, seizures, previous blood clots or stroke before treatment.

Side effects

  • High blood pressure: Erythropoietin can raise blood pressure as red blood cell production increases. Severe headache, confusion or vision changes need urgent medical attention.
  • Nausea and vomiting: These stomach symptoms can occur during treatment. Seek medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Flu-like symptoms: Fever, chills, headache, cough, dizziness, joint pain, bone pain, muscle spasm or difficulty sleeping may occur and should be reported if troublesome.
  • Injection-site irritation: Redness, pain or swelling can occur where the injection enters the body. Rash, mouth inflammation, weight loss, low white blood cell count or increased blood sugar also need medical review.
  • Blood clots or blocked blood vessels: Erythropoietin can increase clotting risk. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness, one-sided weakness or a painful swollen limb needs emergency medical help.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Your doctor will decide whether the expected benefit justifies treatment during pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Available information is limited, so your doctor should decide whether treatment is suitable for you and your baby.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness, headache or high blood pressure may affect alertness. Do not drive if you feel unwell or light-headed.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It may be given under the skin or into a vein, as selected by your doctor. Keep the blood-pressure and blood-test appointments arranged for monitoring.

Storage and disposal

Store Alphared injection in a refrigerator and protect it from light. Do not freeze or shake it. A healthcare professional should handle unused or damaged syringes and dispose of them safely.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every appointment for blood-pressure checks and blood tests.
  • Use iron supplements only if your doctor recommends them, because adequate iron may be needed for this treatment to work.
  • Report chest pain, sudden breathlessness, severe headache or a painful swollen limb urgently.
  • Do not self-inject Alphared injection.
  • Tell the treatment team about previous blood clots, seizures or stroke.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much erythropoietin may cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure or increase clot risk. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Recombinant human erythropoietin alfa acts like the body's natural erythropoietin. It signals the bone marrow to make more red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Alphared injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, iron supplements may improve the response when iron is low, while chemotherapy or medicines used for human immunodeficiency virus infection can affect the cause of anaemia and monitoring. Tell your doctor if you use blood-pressure medicines, blood-thinning medicines or other treatments that affect blood cell production because your treatment plan may need adjustment.
