Medical Description

Absclav 500/ tablet is an antibiotic used to treat selected bacterial infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin, teeth, joints and bones. It contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective wall, while clavulanic acid blocks enzymes that can otherwise break down amoxicillin. Absclav tablet is taken by mouth with or after food as prescribed and does not treat viral illnesses such as the common cold.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or kidney-related problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin prevents bacteria from building a protective outer wall, which causes susceptible bacteria to die. Clavulanic acid blocks bacterial enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin, allowing the antibiotic to work against some resistant bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Absclav tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, blood thinners may increase bleeding risk, methotrexate may cause more side effects, and gout medicines such as probenecid can alter amoxicillin levels. Mention other antibiotics, medicines used after transplantation and oral contraceptives as well.

Interactions with food items

Taking Absclav with food may reduce stomach upset. No other specific food interaction is established.
