Metformin+Vildagliptin is a combination medicine. It is used to treat type 2 di
abetes mellitus when diet, exercise and metformin or vildagliptin alone are not effective. It belongs to a class of medicines called anti-diabetics. Metformin+Vildagliptin is available in the form of a tablet. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about all the medicines and supplements you take and all the conditions or diseases you suffer from, before starting this medicine.
Uses of Vildagliptin+Metformin
Metformin+Vildagliptin is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus when vildagliptin or metformin alone, along with diet and exercise are ineffective in controlling your blood sugar.
Contraindications of Vildagliptin+Metformin
When should one not use Vildagliptin+Metformin
- If you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin or similar medicines
- If you are suffering from any heart problems
- If you have any problems with your kidney or liver
- If you have type 1 diabetes
- If you have uncontrolled diabetes along with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis (symptoms include stomach pain, fast or rapid breathing, sleepiness).
- If you are in a state of diabetic coma due to a sudden rise or drop in blood sugar level
- If you are a breastfeeding mother
- If you have undergone surgery or stress
- If you have a severe infection or dehydration
- If you are an alcoholic or consume alcohol in excess regularly

Common side effects of this drug are:
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Loss of appetite
- Stomach pain
- Constipation

Other General Warnings
Talk to your doctor if
- You have problems with your heart, liver or kidneys

- You have an irregular diet, habit of excessive alcohol intake, intense muscular movement
- You experience symptoms of lactic acidosis like vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, fatigue, difficulty breathing.
- You experience any symptoms like dehydration, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever
- You ever had any surgery on your stomach
- Metformin+Vildagliptin is not recommended for use in patients below 18 years of age.
Mode of Action of Vildagliptin+Metformin
How Does It Work?
Metformin+Vildagliptin acts by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from the intestine, lowering the amount of sugar created by the liver, and facilitating the entry of sugar into the cells.
Interactions of Vildagliptin+Metformin
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way metformin+vildagliptin works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- This combination should be used with caution along with medicine that enhance your blood sugar lowering effect like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, propranolol and medicines that reduce your blood sugar lowering effect like steroids, etc....
- Concomitant use of metformin+vildagliptin along with medicines used to treat high blood pressure like enalapril, captopril, candesartan, losartan may increase the risk of lactic acidosis (symptoms of stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea)....
- Medicines used to treat inflammation and pain (NSAID's) like ibuprofen and celecoxib should be used with caution.
- Medicines like verapamil (used to treat blood pressure and other heart problems), rifampicin (antibiotic), Olaparib (used in cancer treatment) when used concomitantly may reduce the effects of metformin+vildagliptin....
- Medicines used to treat inflammation associated with asthma and arthritis (corticosteroids) like betamethasone, prednisone should be cautiously used along with this combination.
- Medicines like cimetidine, dolutegravir, ranolazine, may change the amount of metformin in your blood when taken concomitantly.
