Molecule Description
Tobramycin is used to treat the infections caused by bacteria.
Uses
- Used to treat bacterial infection of the skin, heart, stomach, brain, spinal cord, lungs and urinary tract
- Used to treat Infection in eye
- Used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis
Contraindications
When should one not use Tobramycin
- Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to this medicine ingredient
- Taking with Ethacrynic Acid, Furosemide, Mannitol or Urea
- Taking the medicines that may damage your kidney
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Black, tarry stools
- Chest pain
- Chills
- Tinnitus (continuous ringing or buzzing noise in the ear)
- Painful or difficult urination
- Tiredness
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat; sores, ulcers or white spots on lips or in the mouth
- Swollen glands
- Hearing loss
- Unusual bleeding or bruising

- Muscle weakness that lasts or becomes worse over time, a symptom mostly related to conditions like myasthenia or Parkinson’s disease
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Tobramycin works by inhibiting protein synthesis. It does this by irreversibly binding to bacterial 30S and 50S ribosomes present in the bacteria and prevents the multiplication and growth of bacteria.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some of the medicines which may interact with Tobramycin:
- Cephaloridine, Cephalosporins (such as Ceftizoxime), Cisplatin, Colistin, Cyclosporine, Fludarabine, loop diuretics (such as Furosemide, Ethacrynic Acid), Methoxyflurane, Nitrosoureas (such as Carmustine), NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen), Polymyxin B, Vancomycin or Viomycin, nondepolarizing muscle relaxants (e.g. Atracurium) or Succinylcholine, etc. may increase the risk of Tobramycin side effects such as increased risk of kidney damage or hearing loss
- Beta-lactam antibiotics such as Penicillin, Imipenem, Sultamicillin may decrease Tobramycin effectiveness

Dosage
Overdose
Overdose of Tobramycin include symptoms such as dizziness, ringing in the ears, difficulty in breathing or decreased breathing, loss of hearing and weakness. Inform your doctor immediately in case of overdose.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed the regular Tobramycin dose, then take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for next dose then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose and consult your doctor for further treatment.
