When should one not use Ranolazine

If you are allergic to ranolazine If you have severe kidney problems or liver problems If you are using certain medicines to treat bacterial infections (clarithromycin, telithromycin), HIV medicines, fungal infections (itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazol, posaconazole), depression (nefazodone) or heart rhythm disorders (e.g. quinidine, dofetilide, or sotalol)

Side effects of Ranolazine

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Mild dizziness, spinning sensation
  • Headache
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
  • Slow, fast, or pounding heartbeats
  • tremors or shaking
  • Blood found to be present in your urine; urinating less than usual or not at all
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, and muscle weakness
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Anxiety, difficulty sleeping, confusional state
  • Blurred vision, visual disturbance

Pregnancy

Can I take Ranolazine during pregnancy?
A:
It is not established whether ranolazine will harm an unborn baby. This medicine should not be taken in pregnancy unless prescribed by your doctor

Breast Feeding

Can I take Ranolazine while breastfeeding?
A:
It is not established whether ranolazine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Driving

Q:
Can I drive if I have consumed Ranolazine?
A:
Ranolazine can cause dizziness, blurring of vision, confusion. Caution is advised while driving.

Alcohol

Q:
Can I consume alcohol with Ranolazine?
A:
Ranolazine may interact with alcohol and increase side effects like light-headedness and dizziness.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Have ever had an abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Have heart failure

How Does It Work?

Ranolazine works by reducing the tension in the heart wall, thus reducing the oxygen requirement of the heart muscles .

Interactions with other medicines

Ranolazine may interact with other medicines like antibiotics such as azithromycin, moxifloxacin, levofloxacin, and clarithromycin; antifungals such as ketoconazole and itraconazole; and with rifampin, phenobarbital, and anti-depressant medicines, antidiabetics like metformin, lipid-lowering medicines like statins (simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin) these medicines can be caused muscle pain, medicines used in organ transplant ( tacrolimus, ciclosporin).

Dosage of Ranolazine

Overdose

High doses of ranolazine produce dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Severe tremor, incoordination, difficulty speaking, and seeing things that don’t exist(hallucinations) have also been reported in cases of overdose with ranolazine. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Missed a Dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time (less than 6 hours) to take your next dose. Do not take an extra or double dose to compensate for a forgotten dose.
