Molecule Description

Leucovorin or Folinic Acid, as it is commonly known, is used to decrease the toxicity of nerves (neurotoxic) and kidneys (nephrotoxic) post-chemotherapy. It can also be used to treat colorectal cancer.

Uses

Severe blood cell disorders (like thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, anemia) caused by certain medicines (Folic Acid antagonists such as Methotrexate, Trimethoprim, Pyrimethamine).

Contraindications

When should one not use Leucovorin

Allergy to anemia of the pernicious kind and any other form of Calcium Folinate.

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug are:

Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue, throat)
Severe dizziness, trouble breathing

Pregnancy

This medicine is not recommended for pregnant women unless necessary, and it should be done in consultation with a doctor.

Breast Feeding

Leucovorin is also not recommended for lactating and breastfeeding women. It is advised to consult a doctor before taking this medicine.
