Fexofenadine
Description
Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine used to treat various allergi
es. It acts as a highly selective antagonist of the H1 histamine receptor. This means it blocks histamine, a key chemical released by the body during an allergic reaction, from binding to its receptors. By inhibiting this process, Fexofenadine prevents histamine from causing common allergic symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and skin reactions like hives (urticaria), redness, and swelling. It is non-sedating in nature. Unlike older antihistamines, it does not easily cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This ensures that it relieves allergy symptoms without causing significant drowsiness, making it suitable for daytime use and helping maintain alertness. Fexofenadine is commonly prescribed to treat symptoms of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (hay fever), Perennial Allergic Rhinitis, and Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (long-lasting hives). It is available in oral forms, including film-coated tablets and oral suspensions.
