Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid is a combination medicine. It is used to treat infection of the urinary tract, lungs, airways, sinus, throat and windpipe. Cefpodoxime works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria by interfering with the cell wall and clavulanic acid helps in maintaining the optimal levels of cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid is available in the form of tablets, capsules, syrup, suspension, oral drops, dry syrup and dry suspension. Uses

Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid is used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the skin, ear, respiratory tract, urinary tract, lungs, throat and tonsil and sexually transmitted diseases.

Contraindications

When should one not use Cefpodoxime Proxetil+Clavulanic Acid

If you are allergic to cefpodoxime proxetil, clavulanic acid or similar medicines like cephalosporin class of antibiotics.
If you have problems with your liver or kidney.
If you have fits
If you have an infection that is caused by the bacteria Clostridium difficile.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Breast Feeding

Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid passes into breast milk in low amounts. Thus, your doctor will decide on either discontinuing the medicine or breastfeeding after assessing the potential risk on breastfeeding infant over the risk of delayed treatment on breastfeeding mother.

Driving

Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid may make you feel dizzy, thus you need to be cautious while driving.

Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol with Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid, as it may worsen the side effects.

Other General Warnings

You have a history of allergic reactions to any antibiotic medicine.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Cefpodoxime controls the growth of bacteria and kills them by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. However, the bacteria make an enzyme (beta-lactamases) that can destroy Cefpodoxime.
Clavulanic acid inactivates this enzyme and hence helps Cefpodoxime to function optimally.

Some medicines can affect the way Cefpodoxime proxetil+Clavulanic acid works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
