Medical Description

Zyrig injection is used with a rabies vaccine after a possible exposure to rabies from an animal bite, scratch or saliva contact. It contains rabies immunoglobulin, ready-made antibodies that give immediate protection around the exposure wound while the vaccine helps the body build its own longer-lasting protection. The antibodies neutralise rabies virus near the wound before the immune response becomes strong. Zyrig injection is given by trained healthcare staff in a hospital or clinic and is not self-injected.

Uses

  • Suspected rabies exposure: After a bite, scratch or saliva contact from a potentially infected animal, this injection provides immediate antibody protection with the recommended rabies vaccine.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, tell the treating doctor before it is given. A previous serious reaction to human immunoglobulin or a blood-derived product must be discussed urgently, but allergy history must be weighed against the need for emergency rabies protection. This medicine does not replace wound cleaning or rabies vaccination.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may occur where the product is given, especially around the wound. Tell the nurse if swelling spreads quickly or becomes severe.
  • Upset stomach: Nausea or stomach discomfort may occur after the injection. Tell the treating team if vomiting prevents planned wound care or vaccination.
  • Rash: A skin rash can signal a reaction to rabies immunoglobulin. Alert the healthcare team promptly if it spreads or appears with faintness.
  • Severe allergic reaction: Breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat needs emergency medical help immediately.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. After a possible rabies exposure, the need for urgent protection is assessed by the treating doctor.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The treating team will weigh the need for immediate rabies protection and guide you about continued breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive until you know how you feel after the injection. Ask someone to accompany you if you feel weak, dizzy, or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No clear effect of alcohol on this injection is established. Avoid alcohol if you feel unwell and follow the treating team's advice.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The treating team will clean the wound and place the medicine around the exposure site as appropriate, then arrange rabies vaccination. It must not be injected into a vein.

Storage and disposal

Zyrig injection should be stored by the hospital or clinic in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on the pack and protected from unsuitable heat or light. Do not freeze it. Unused or opened product must be discarded by healthcare staff according to local clinical procedures.

Quick Tips

  • Wash the exposure wound thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, unless a healthcare professional tells you otherwise.
  • Reach a hospital or clinic urgently after a possible rabies exposure.
  • Tell the treating team about previous rabies vaccination and any immune-related condition or medicine.
  • Complete the rabies vaccination plan arranged by the doctor, even if the wound looks small.
  • Return immediately for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or a rapidly worsening reaction.

Dosage

Overdose

This injection is given by healthcare staff, so excess administration is unlikely. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The medicine contains ready-made antibodies against rabies virus. These antibodies act around the exposure wound to neutralise virus particles early, while the rabies vaccine stimulates the body to develop longer-lasting protection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Zyrig injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the treating team about any rabies vaccine already received, planned vaccines, live vaccines and medicines that suppress the immune system. Zyrig injection is used with the recommended rabies vaccine, not instead of it, and may reduce the response to some live vaccines.
