Medical Description

Zavedos Dry powder for injection is a chemotherapy medicine used in specialist treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia and, in selected cases, acute lymphocytic leukaemia. It contains idarubicin, an anthracycline medicine that interferes with the genetic material of rapidly dividing abnormal blood cells. By slowing their growth and causing them to die, idarubicin can help reduce leukaemia cells and allow healthy blood-cell production to recover. Zavedos Dry powder for injection is prepared and given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with close monitoring.

Uses

  • Acute myeloid leukaemia: Used with specialist chemotherapy to destroy abnormal leukaemia cells and support recovery of normal blood-cell production in the bone marrow.
  • Acute lymphocytic leukaemia: May be used in selected cases when a specialist recommends it, including when earlier treatment has not worked.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. Your specialist should not give it if you have severely low blood-cell counts, a serious uncontrolled infection, severe liver or kidney disease, serious heart disease, or previous treatment that has reached the safe limit for similar anthracycline medicines.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Idarubicin can irritate the digestive system during treatment. Tell the care team if nausea stops you eating or drinking.
  • Vomiting: Treatment may trigger vomiting, which can lead to dehydration. Report repeated vomiting promptly so the team can treat it.
  • Low blood counts: Idarubicin can reduce infection-fighting cells, red cells and platelets. Fever, unusual weakness, bruising or bleeding needs urgent medical attention.
  • Mouth sores: Fast-growing cells in the mouth may be affected, causing painful ulcers. Tell the care team if sores make drinking difficult.
  • Hair loss: Hair-producing cells can be affected during treatment, and hair may grow back after treatment ends. Report painful scalp changes.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use this medicine in pregnancy. It can seriously harm the unborn baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol safety is not established with this treatment. Ask your oncology team before drinking alcohol.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if treatment causes dizziness, weakness, blurred vision or reduced concentration.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Do not breastfeed during treatment unless your cancer specialist confirms it is safe, because idarubicin may harm the baby.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Your healthcare team will check blood counts, infection signs, heart function and other tests during treatment.

Storage and disposal

This injection must be stored and prepared by the hospital or clinic according to its handling requirements. Do not keep, transport or dispose of it at home.

Quick Tips

  • Attend every blood test and treatment appointment arranged by your specialist team.
  • Report fever, chills, bleeding, unusual bruising or severe weakness promptly.
  • Avoid live vaccines unless your specialist specifically approves them.
  • Tell the team immediately about pain, redness, swelling or burning at the injection site.
  • Use gentle mouth care and report ulcers that prevent eating or drinking.
  • Report breathlessness, ankle swelling, fainting or a fast heartbeat promptly.

Dosage

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

Overdose

An excessive amount can cause severe low blood counts, infection, bleeding, heart problems or other serious effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

How does this medicine work?

In treated cells, idarubicin attaches to genetic material and blocks a process needed to copy and repair it. It also forms reactive molecules that cause further damage. Affected abnormal cells can no longer multiply normally and may die, reducing the number of leukaemia cells.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Zavedos works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other chemotherapy or heart-affecting treatments, chest radiotherapy, live vaccines, immunosuppressive medicines and medicines that can disturb heart rhythm. Also mention natalizumab, amiodarone, artemether, sparfloxacin or pimozide, because combinations may increase infection risk or serious heart-rhythm problems.

Interactions with food items

Zavedos powder for injection may be taken with a light meal. No other specific food interactions are documented in the prescribing information.
