Medical Description

Z-Texel solution for infusion is a chemotherapy medicine used for advanced prostate tumours that have progressed after earlier treatment. It contains cabazitaxel, which interferes with the internal structures tumour cells need to divide and multiply. By slowing cell division, cabazitaxel helps limit tumour growth and may ease urinary difficulty caused by the disease. The prepared solution is diluted and given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with blood tests and supportive care arranged by the oncology team.

Uses

  • Prostate cancer: Cabazitaxel is used under oncology supervision for advanced prostate cancer that has progressed after earlier treatment, helping slow tumour growth.
  • Urinary difficulty from prostate cancer: By reducing tumour growth, treatment may ease difficulty passing urine in some people with advanced prostate disease.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. It should not be given when blood tests show very low infection-fighting cells or when there is a serious infection. Tell your doctor about severe kidney disease, liver problems, previous reactions to chemotherapy and every medicine you use.

Side effects

  • Low red blood cell count: Cabazitaxel can reduce red blood cells, causing tiredness, weakness or breathlessness. Blood tests help the oncology team monitor this change.
  • Diarrhoea: The treatment can irritate the bowel and cause loose stools. Contact the oncology team urgently if it is severe, persistent or causes dizziness.
  • Nausea: The infusion may upset the stomach and cause a queasy feeling. Use the anti-sickness treatment prescribed and seek help if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation can lead to vomiting after treatment. Tell the oncology team promptly if you cannot keep fluids or medicines down.
  • Blood in urine: Treatment may be associated with blood-stained urine or urinary irritation. Report it promptly, especially if urination becomes painful or difficult.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or could become pregnant. Cabazitaxel may harm an unborn baby, so the oncology specialist will decide whether treatment is essential and will advise on contraception.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Do not breastfeed during treatment unless your doctor specifically confirms it is safe. Tell the oncology team if you are breastfeeding before the infusion.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if you feel dizzy, weak, unwell or less alert after treatment. Ask your doctor when driving is appropriate.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol during treatment unless your oncology team advises otherwise. Alcohol safety is not established and may add to liver-related risks.

Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You are 65 years of age or older, which may make you more likely to experience certain side effects and require closer monitoring.
  • You have pre-existing liver impairment, as dosage adjustment is required. A lower dose is used for mild or moderate liver impairment, and the medicine is contraindicated in severe liver impairment.
  • You have pre-existing kidney impairment. No dose adjustment is generally needed unless kidney function is very severely reduced, in which case your doctor will monitor you closely.
  • You experience fever, chills, or any signs of infection during treatment, as prompt medical intervention is required.
  • You notice severe, persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, or blood in your stool.
  • You develop sudden allergic symptoms during or shortly after the infusion, such as rash, wheezing, or dizziness.
  • You have previously received radiation to the pelvic area, as you may be at higher risk of bladder-related side effects.
  • You have any underlying lung disease, as you may be at higher risk of lung-related side effects.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Z-Texel solution for infusion is diluted and administered through a vein by trained staff. Blood tests and supportive treatment are arranged before and during therapy.

Storage and disposal

Z-Texel solution for infusion must be stored, prepared and discarded by the hospital or clinic according to medicine-handling requirements. Do not store or handle it at home.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every blood-test and infusion appointment arranged by your oncology team.
  • Report fever, chills, sore throat, cough or feeling unusually unwell promptly because treatment can lower infection-fighting cells.
  • Tell the infusion nurse immediately about rash, wheezing, dizziness or swelling.
  • Drink fluids as advised, especially if diarrhoea or vomiting occurs.
  • Do not start vitamins, herbal products or other medicines without checking with your oncology team.

Dosage

Missed a Dose

If you miss an infusion appointment, contact your oncology team for advice. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe suppression of blood cells, infection, diarrhoea or other serious reactions. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

How does this medicine work?

Cabazitaxel interferes with microtubules, the internal structures that prostate tumour cells need to divide and multiply. When these structures cannot work normally, cell division slows and some tumour cells die. This medicine is given through a vein under close medical supervision.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Z-Texel solution works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the oncology team about atazanavir, clarithromycin and other medicines that slow the breakdown of cabazitaxel, because they can increase cabazitaxel levels and side effects. Also mention medicines for infections, cancer, seizures or other serious conditions before treatment.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Ask the oncology team before using herbal products, vitamins or supplements during treatment.
