Medical Description

Wypal suspension is an antibiotic used for selected bacterial infections of the urinary tract, respiratory system and intestines when a clinician considers this combination appropriate. It contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which block two linked steps bacteria use to make essential substances. This prevents susceptible bacteria from growing, but it does not treat viral illnesses such as colds. Wypal suspension is shaken, measured and taken by mouth under prescription, with the liquid used exactly as directed. The choice of treatment depends on the infection and the person's medical history.

Uses

  • Urinary tract infections: May be prescribed for selected infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.
  • Respiratory bacterial infections: May treat certain susceptible infections affecting the lungs or airways when a clinician considers it appropriate.
  • Intestinal bacterial infections: May be used for selected infections of the intestines caused by susceptible bacteria after medical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, sulfonamide medicines or trimethoprim, do not use Wypal suspension. Do not use it with dofetilide unless a specialist specifically directs this. Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver disease, serious blood disorders, folate deficiency or a previous severe reaction to similar medicines.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may irritate the stomach, particularly when treatment begins. Seek advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in bowel bacteria may cause loose stools. Severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially with blood or fever, needs urgent medical assessment.
  • Skin rash: A new rash can be an early sign of a serious reaction. Stop the medicine and obtain urgent medical care if it spreads, blisters or affects the mouth.
  • Sun sensitivity: The medicine may make skin burn more easily in strong sunlight. Limit exposure and seek help for severe blistering or peeling.

Directions for Use

Storage and disposal

Store Wypal suspension in a cool place, protected from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the cap tightly closed and do not freeze it. Use the prepared suspension within 30 days of opening, or as stated on the pack. Keep it out of reach of children.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the suspension before every use.
  • Use the supplied measuring device, not a household spoon.
  • Finish the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • Protect your skin from strong sunlight.
  • Report rash, mouth sores or severe diarrhoea promptly.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Wypal suspension may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion or changes in urine. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim block different steps in the same process bacteria use to make essential substances. Without this process, susceptible bacteria cannot grow and multiply effectively. The combination does not treat viral illnesses such as common colds.
