Medical Description

Wycort Oint ointment is used to reduce redness, itching and inflammation in selected skin conditions. It contains hydrocortisone, a mild steroid medicine that calms an overactive immune response in the skin. This reduces the local signals that cause swelling, irritation and itching. Wycort ointment is applied to the skin for short-term use as prescribed and is for external use only. A healthcare professional should confirm that a steroid is suitable before use.

Uses

  • Inflammatory skin conditions: Hydrocortisone can calm redness, swelling and itching in eczema, dermatitis and other skin conditions diagnosed as suitable for a mild steroid.
  • Steroid-responsive itching: By reducing local inflammation, Wycort ointment may relieve itching and irritation when infection is not the cause.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Wycort ointment. Do not apply it to untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections, cold sores, chickenpox, acne, rosacea or open wounds. Keep it away from the eyes and do not apply it to large areas of skin unless a doctor advises it.

Side effects

  • Skin irritation: Hydrocortisone may cause burning, stinging, itching or redness shortly after application. Stop using the ointment if the irritation becomes severe or spreads beyond the treated area.
  • Skin thinning: Repeated heavy application can make the skin thinner and may cause stretch marks or a change in skin colour. Use the ointment only for the advised period.
  • Worsening infection: A steroid can mask or worsen an untreated infection, which may show as increasing pain, warmth, pus or spreading redness. Seek medical advice promptly.
  • Allergic reaction: A new rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty may indicate sensitivity to the ointment. Get emergency medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

Using too much Wycort ointment may increase skin irritation or steroid absorption. If a large amount gets into the mouth or eyes by accident, rinse with water. If you think you have used too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid medicine that reduces the release of natural substances responsible for redness, swelling and itching. This calms the skin's overactive inflammatory response and helps reduce discomfort in the treated area.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Wycort ointment works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other steroid creams, tablets or inhalers, medicines that suppress immunity, and products used on the same skin area. Using several steroid products together may increase steroid-related skin effects.
