Medical Description

Wemoxyl Kid tablet is a paediatric antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections and, in selected treatment plans, bacteria linked with peptic ulcer disease. It contains amoxicillin, which stops susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall needed for survival. Wemoxyl Kid tablet is specially designed for use in children and should be used under adult supervision. Give it by mouth as a whole tablet with or without food, exactly as the child's doctor advises, and do not use it for colds or flu caused by viruses.

Uses

  • Bacterial infections: Amoxicillin may treat susceptible infections of the ear, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and digestive system when prescribed for the child.
  • Peptic ulcer disease: Amoxicillin may be part of a combination that removes the bacteria linked with some ulcers, under a doctor's treatment plan.
  • Dental infections: Susceptible infections around teeth or gums may improve when the child's doctor prescribes amoxicillin for this purpose.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not give it. Do not give it to a child who has had a serious immediate reaction to amoxicillin, penicillin or a closely related antibiotic. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, glandular fever, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea or severe skin reactions before use.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools; give fluids as advised and report bloody stools or severe cramps.
  • Nausea: Amoxicillin may upset the stomach; giving it with food may help if the doctor permits, but seek advice if vomiting continues.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation can cause vomiting; contact the doctor if the child cannot keep fluids or medicine down.
  • Skin rash: A rash may be an allergy or a non-serious reaction; stop and contact the doctor promptly if it spreads, blisters or affects the mouth.
  • Allergic reaction: Hives, facial swelling or breathing difficulty can develop suddenly; stop the medicine and get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Wemoxyl Kid tablet may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or problems in children with kidney disease. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin blocks the formation of the protective wall around susceptible bacteria. Without this wall, the bacteria are damaged and die, helping the infection clear.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Wemoxyl Kid tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements the child takes. In particular, probenecid can increase amoxicillin exposure, allopurinol may increase the chance of a rash, blood thinners may alter clotting results, and other antibiotics may change the treatment effect.

Interactions with food items

Wemoxyl Kid tablet may be given with or without food. If it upsets the child's stomach, ask the doctor whether giving it with food is suitable.
