Medical Description

Vobit tablet is a combination medicine used with diet and physical activity to manage type 2 diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar remains too high. It contains glimepiride, voglibose and sustained-release metformin hydrochloride: glimepiride helps the pancreas release insulin, voglibose slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the intestine, and metformin reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Together, these actions help lower blood sugar after meals and between meals. Vobit tablet is taken by mouth as a whole tablet exactly as prescribed.

Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes: This combination helps manage high blood sugar when the body does not use insulin effectively or make enough. Glimepiride increases insulin release, voglibose slows carbohydrate breakdown, and metformin reduces glucose made by the liver.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, including glimepiride, other sulfonylureas, sulfonamides, metformin or voglibose, do not take Vobit tablet. Do not use Vobit tablet for type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma or lactic acidosis. It is also unsuitable in severe kidney or liver disease, acute alcohol intoxication, uncontrolled heart failure, breathing failure, a recent heart attack, severe infection or trauma, intestinal obstruction, or a tendency to develop intestinal obstruction.

Side effects

  • Low blood sugar: The glimepiride component may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, confusion or fainting when blood sugar falls; take a quick source of sugar and seek urgent help if severe.
  • Digestive upset: The metformin and voglibose components can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, heartburn, loss of appetite, abdominal distention or increased flatus, especially when treatment begins; seek care for severe symptoms.
  • Metallic taste: The metformin component may leave a metal-like taste in the mouth, which can alter how food tastes; tell your doctor if it is persistent or troublesome.
  • Blood and lymphatic disorders: Rare changes in blood cells may show as fever, sore throat, unusual bruising or repeated infections; contact your doctor promptly if these occur.
  • Serious reactions: Intestinal obstruction, eye disorders or lactic acidosis can occur rarely; seek emergency help for severe abdominal swelling, vision changes, unusual tiredness, muscle pain, rapid breathing or confusion.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or think you may be pregnant. Treatment may need to be changed because diabetes in pregnancy needs careful blood sugar control. Do not continue or stop Vobit tablet without medical advice.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor before breastfeeding. Glimepiride may pass into breast milk and could lower a baby's blood sugar, while information about voglibose is limited. Your doctor will decide whether Vobit tablet is appropriate and may advise watching the baby for poor feeding, unusual sleepiness or shakiness.

Driving

Driving

Vobit tablet can cause low blood sugar, which may lead to sweating, shaking, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion or fainting. Do not drive or operate machinery if these symptoms occur, and follow your doctor's advice about checking blood sugar before driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol unless your doctor says it is safe. Alcohol can increase low blood sugar and lactic acidosis, particularly if meals are missed or you are unwell.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Take Vobit tablet with a meal if your doctor advises. Do not crush or chew the tablet because it contains sustained-release metformin. Use it only as prescribed, and do not change or stop it without medical advice. Do not skip meals after taking it.

Storage and disposal

Store Vobit tablet below 30°C in a dry place protected from light and moisture. Keep it in its original packaging and out of the reach of children. Dispose of unused or expired tablets according to local guidance, and do not share them with anyone else.

Quick Tips

  • Do not skip meals, and keep a quick source of sugar available if your doctor has warned you about low blood sugar.
  • Check your blood sugar as advised and record unusual readings for your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor before a scan involving contrast dye or before a major procedure.
  • Seek urgent help for severe weakness, muscle pain, rapid breathing, persistent vomiting, stomach pain or confusion.
  • Avoid alcohol and follow the diet and physical activity plan advised for your diabetes.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause low blood sugar with sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, confusion, unusual sleepiness or loss of consciousness. Severe stomach symptoms or lactic acidosis can also occur. If you are conscious and able to swallow safely, use a quick source of sugar while arranging urgent help for suspected low blood sugar. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The glimepiride component stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, which helps move glucose from the blood into cells. The voglibose component slows the breakdown of some carbohydrates in the intestine, reducing the rise in blood sugar after meals. The metformin component reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body respond better to insulin. Together, these actions improve blood sugar control.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Vobit tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, other diabetes medicines, insulin and other blood-sugar-lowering medicines can increase low blood sugar. Corticosteroids and water tablets may raise blood sugar, while thyroid medicines can alter blood sugar control. Some medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease, especially beta-blockers, can hide warning signs of low blood sugar. Medicines that affect kidney function, contrast dye used for scans, and other medicines that increase the risk of lactic acidosis can increase metformin-related risk.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can increase the risk of low blood sugar and lactic acidosis with Vobit tablet. Avoid alcohol and do not skip meals, especially when you are unwell, unless your doctor gives different advice.
