Medical Description

Vilmist inhalation capsule is a maintenance medicine used to control asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, long-term conditions that can narrow the airways and make breathing difficult. It contains a combination of fluticasone furoate and vilanterol. The fluticasone furoate is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation, while vilanterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes airway muscles. The capsule is placed in the supplied inhaler and the contents are breathed into the lungs; it is not a rescue treatment for a sudden attack.

Uses

  • Asthma control: Reduces airway inflammation and helps keep the airways open to support ongoing symptom control.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Relaxes narrowed airways and reduces daily wheezing, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness.
  • Flare-up prevention: Regular maintenance use may reduce worsening of long-term airway symptoms, but it cannot treat a sudden attack.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have heart disease, irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, seizures, glaucoma, tuberculosis or another lung infection. This maintenance medicine is not for sudden severe breathing difficulty.

Side effects

  • Nasal and throat inflammation: A blocked nose, runny nose or sore throat, sometimes called nasopharyngitis, may occur during treatment; seek care if symptoms come with high fever or breathing trouble.
  • Headache: Vilmist inhalation capsule may cause head pain during treatment; seek advice if it is severe, sudden or persistent.
  • Oral fungal infection: Fluticasone furoate can leave steroid residue that allows white patches or soreness in the mouth; rinse and spit after use and report persistence.
  • Pneumonia: New fever, worsening cough, chest pain or increasing breathlessness can signal a lung infection; seek urgent medical assessment rather than treating it as a usual flare-up.
  • Fast heartbeat: Vilanterol may cause a racing or pounding heartbeat; seek urgent advice if it is severe or associated with chest pain.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Vilmist should be used only after the expected benefit and possible risk have been considered.

Directions for Use

Use Vilmist inhalation capsule only with the supplied inhaler device. Do not swallow the capsule. Load it into the device as instructed, inhale deeply through the mouthpiece and remove the empty capsule after use. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out. Use it exactly as prescribed. Keep a separate quick-relief inhaler available for sudden attacks if your doctor has prescribed one.

Storage and disposal

Store Vilmist in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep capsules in their original pack and out of the reach of children. Do not use a capsule that is damaged or has been removed from its pack for a long time.

Quick Tips

  • Use Vilmist inhalation capsule regularly even when you feel well.
  • Rinse your mouth and spit after every inhalation.
  • Do not use Vilmist inhalation capsule for a sudden breathing attack.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to check your inhaler technique.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Fluticasone furoate reduces swelling and irritation inside the airways, making them less likely to react to triggers. Vilanterol relaxes the muscles surrounding the airways so air can move more freely. Together, they provide long-lasting control of airway inflammation and narrowing.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Vilmist works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention beta-blockers, strong antifungal medicines, some medicines for human immunodeficiency virus, other inhaled steroids, medicines that lower potassium, water tablets and medicines affecting heart rhythm. Beta-blockers may reduce vilanterol's airway-opening effect, while strong antifungal or antiviral medicines may raise medicine levels and side effects.

Interactions with food items

No clinically important food interaction is known with Vilmist when used as directed.
