Medical Description

Vgmet 50/1000 tablet is a prescription combination medicine used with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains metformin and vildagliptin, which lower blood sugar through complementary actions. Metformin reduces sugar made by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin, while vildagliptin helps the pancreas release insulin when sugar rises and reduces signals that increase sugar release. The tablet is taken by mouth with or immediately after food, swallowed whole with water, and used under medical supervision.

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Metformin reduces the amount of sugar made by the liver and helps body cells respond better to insulin. It also slows some sugar absorption from the intestine. Vildagliptin helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar rises after meals and reduces a hormone signal that tells the liver to release sugar. Together, these actions improve blood sugar control.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Vgmet tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, insulin and other blood-sugar medicines can increase low blood sugar; corticosteroids may raise sugar; water tablets, thyroid medicines and cimetidine can alter control or metformin levels; heart or blood-pressure medicines may affect sugar or kidney function; and medicines that affect kidney function or injected contrast can raise metformin-related risks. Tell your doctor before surgery or contrast imaging.

Interactions with food items

Take Vgmet tablet with or immediately after food to reduce stomach upset. Alcohol can increase the risk of low blood sugar and a serious acid build-up associated with metformin.
