Medical Description

V Safe Vaginal vaginal tablet is a combination medicine used for fungal infections of the vagina and related itching, burning, irritation or unusual discharge. It contains clindamycin, clotrimazole and tinidazole, which act against susceptible bacteria, fungi and certain other microorganisms. Clindamycin limits bacterial protein production, clotrimazole damages the fungal cell membrane, and tinidazole damages the genetic material of susceptible microorganisms. The tablet is inserted into the vagina as directed, usually at bedtime, and must not be swallowed. Use it only after a clinician has assessed the symptoms because other causes of discharge need different treatment.

Uses

  • Vaginal fungal infection: Clotrimazole stops fungal growth that can cause itching, burning, irritation and unusual discharge, helping relieve symptoms when this diagnosis is confirmed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, clindamycin, clotrimazole, tinidazole or related medicines, do not use it. Tell your doctor about severe diarrhoea after antibiotic treatment, liver problems, blood disorders, nervous system conditions or a previous reaction to tinidazole. Do not use it for unexplained discharge without medical assessment.

Side effects

  • Vaginal irritation: Mild burning, stinging or soreness can occur where the tablet is inserted. Contact your doctor if the discomfort is severe or persistent.
  • Diarrhoea: Clindamycin can rarely disturb bowel bacteria even after vaginal use. Get medical advice promptly for severe, persistent or bloody stools.
  • Allergic reaction: Rash, wheezing or swelling can rarely occur with these medicines. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Safety has not been established, so use V Safe Vaginal vaginal tablet only after your doctor weighs the benefits and possible risks.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Because tinidazole and the other ingredients may enter milk, your doctor may advise pausing breastfeeding until treatment is complete and the medicine has cleared.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if you experience dizziness, weakness or visual changes. Ask your doctor if these symptoms occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised by your doctor after treatment because tinidazole may cause unpleasant reactions with alcohol.

For vaginal use only. Wash your hands and the vaginal area, then dry gently. Insert V Safe Vaginal tablet into the vagina as directed by your doctor or the product label, usually before bedtime. Wash your hands after use. Do not swallow the tablet. Avoid contact with the eyes and rinse with plenty of water after accidental exposure. Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Clindamycin stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. Clotrimazole damages the cell membrane of fungi, stopping their growth. Tinidazole damages the genetic material of certain bacteria and other microorganisms. These ingredients act at the vaginal site against organisms that can contribute to infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way V Safe Vaginal tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention codergocrine, sirolimus, tacrolimus and calcitriol, blood thinners such as warfarin, lithium, medicines affecting the nervous system, medicines processed by the liver, clindamycin or tinidazole, medicines affecting heart rhythm, and other vaginal products. Tinidazole can increase warfarin's effect and the risk of bleeding, while the other listed combinations need a clinician's review because their effects may change.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised afterwards because tinidazole can cause an unpleasant reaction with alcohol.
